"No Alcohol, No...": Gambhir's 'Diet' For Sharp Memory Is A Must For 2024

Former Indian cricket team batter Gautam Gambhir has been a big follower of healthy lifestyle and over the years, he has openly talked about his strict diet and fitness regime. The left-hander once again reiterated his commitment to a heavy lifestyle while answering a question from a fan on social media. During a Q&A session on X (formerly known as Twitter), a fan enquired about the secret behind Gambhir's sharp memory and he was quick to respond - "Healthy boring diet. No alcohol, no smoking".

Meanwhile, India's dream of winning a Test series in South Africa for the first time was ended inside three days as they crashed to an innings and 32 runs defeat at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Thursday.

With the series consisting of only two matches they can at best earn a share of the honours if they win the second Test starting in Cape Town on Wednesday.

India had no answer to South Africa's pace attack as they crashed to 131 all out in their second innings, after conceding a 163-run first innings lead.

A day which started with the match evenly poised turned into a rout for the tourists.

Dean Elgar (185) and Marco Jansen (84 not out) transformed a slender 11-run lead for South Africa at the start of play into a strong position.

They shared a 111-run sixth wicket partnership as South Africa took an overnight 256 for five to 408 all out despite the absent of injured captain Temba Bavuma.

Virat Kohli hit an aggressive 76 for India before he was last man out but the rest of the batting collapsed against South Africa's fast bowlers on a lively pitch.

The second innings lasted just 34.1 overs. Kohli hit 12 fours and a six in an 82-ball innings. Shubman Gill made 26 but no other batsman scored more than six.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has asserted that "all Hamas terrorists, from the first to the last, are dead men. They have only two options: surrender or die." But Hamas' latest statement has put the Israeli government in a difficult position. Viral: Even Tiger Is Scared Of Lewis Hamilton. Video Resurfaces

An old video of Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton scaring a tiger has resurfaced on social media. In the clip, the British driver could be seen approaching the tiger from back. Meanwhile, the tiger, totally unaware of what was happening behind, walks comfortably before he stops and stares at the people standing in front of him. This is when Hamilton touches the tiger on his back with the animal getting surprised. The act left everyone in splits as the tiger flipped on the floor, visibly scared.

Watch it here:

Former Formula One world champion Jenson Button says his old teammate Lewis Hamilton needs "the right car" to return to the front of the grid next season with Red Bull favourites again to clean up in 2024.

For the second year running, Mercedes driver Hamilton failed to win a grand prix as Max Verstappen won 19 of the 22 races with Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez taking two of the other three.

"Red Bull are going to be at the front again next year," Button told AFP.

"They had a strong car this year and they've been able to work on next year's car.

"The thing is, if you just look at the results of the race, you go 'Oh Max Verstappen won again' but when you actually watch the races, there have been some amazing races this year.

"Max hasn't had it all his own way. He's come out on top in the end but there have been some great fights this season.

"I have enjoyed the year. Would I like more people winning? Yes of course. But it's just not happened."

Button, who has just announced a return to full-time racing in 2024 with the World Endurance Championship, knows a thing or two about domination having won six of the first seven races in 2009, a start that launched him to the title with Brawn.

And he has an admiration for the single-mindedness with which Verstappen set about his business.

"I think Max has done such an amazing job," said Button.

"He's not put a foot wrong. He's obviously driving a good car, you don't win without a good car, but you've just got to compare him to where his teammate was most races. It's a big difference.

"Going into 2024, Red Bull are still the favourites but I think the other teams will be a bit closer.

"It's not going to be easy to beat Max in a Red Bull if his head is in the right place."

Rohit Was Informed About Mumbai Indians Captaincy Change During WC: Report

The one news that has been making the headlines in Indian cricket since Friday is the appointment of Hardik Pandya as the new Mumba Indians captain in place of Rohit Sharma. While Hardik Pandya has earlier led Gujarat Titans to two successive IPL finals, winning one of them, Rohit Sharma has been one of the most successful captains in the history of the T20 franchise league. Rohit Sharma commands a huge fan following and his removal as the skipper was met with some strong reactions from Mumbai Indian supporters.

Now, a new report has claimed that Rohit Sharma was informed about the need of change in Mumbai Indians captaincy around the start of the ODI Cricket World Cup 2023, which began  in the first week of October. According to the report in Indian Express, Rohit Sharma agreed to play under Hardik Pandya in IPL 2024.

Hardik Pandya, who had left Mumbai Indians to join Gujarat Titans in 2022, was bought back ahead of the IPL 2024. The report claimed that Hardik Pandya's condition was that he would return to Mumbai Indians if he is made the captain. The MI management then decided on the way forward and made Rohit Sharma aware of their decision.

Mumbai Indians (MI) on Friday named Hardik Pandya as their captain ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Hardik replaced a highly-successful Rohit Sharma, who led the IPL giants to five trophies. The announcement from Mumbai Indians came after Hardik made a return to the franchise last month, following a high-profile trade from Gujarat Titans, whom he led in the past two seasons. After announcing the news of the captaincy change, MI put a heartfelt post on social media for Rohit.

"Ro, In 2013 you took over as captain of MI. You asked us to Believe. In victories & defeats, you asked us to Smile. 10 years & 6 trophies later, here we are. Our forever captain your legacy will be etched in Blue & Gold. Thank you, Captain RO," wrote MI on X, formerly Twitter.

Earlier in a statement on Friday, Mumbai Indians said the change in leadership was part of their future planning and thanked Rohit for his exemplary service to the franchise.

Mumbai Indians are the most successful IPL franchise alongside Chennai Super Kings who both have won five titles each.

Rohit, who recently led India to the ODI World Cup final, had been captaining the franchise since 2013 when they lifted first of their five IPL trophies.

The other titles under Rohit's captaincy came in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Mumbai Indians had made it to the play-offs in IPL 2023.

"We express our gratitude to Rohit Sharma for his exceptional leadership; his tenure as the captain of the Mumbai Indians since 2013 has been nothing short of extraordinary," said Mahela Jayawardene, MI's Global Head of Performance.

Review: Kastoori Is A Simple Film About A Complex Reality

Vinod Kamble's Kastoori (The Musk) uses his own experiences as the raw material for a powerful, unflinching examination of how the caste system works to disempower the already marginalised.

In the story that Kamble tells, social ostracism dents the psyche of a boy from an impoverished family of manual scavengers in insidious ways and compels him to seek escape from its stench.

The film uses the young protagonist's search as a means to spotlight all that is blatantly wrong with socially-enforced oppression and exploitation.

While the independent Marathi-Hindi film, shot in and around the village in Maharashtra's Solapur district where the director grew up, pulls no punches, it does not hurl stones at the boy's tormentors nor does it holler at the top of its voice to grab the attention of those that turn a blind eye to dreadful, deep-rooted inequities.

All that Kastoori seeks to do - and does successfully - is make us feel the horrors of the caste system. It views a harsh reality through the eyes of a schoolboy who, in his innocence, believes in the myth that musk can help him get rid of the malodourous effect that his caste-assigned calling has on his body and clothes.

That apart, Kastoori, scripted by Kamble and Shivaji Karde, delves into the complex, intractable nature of the social shackles that prevent those that are disadvantaged on account of their birth from shaking off the roles perniciously foisted upon them.

Kastoori has made it to the multiplexes after a long wait that highlights the plight of personal cinema in a distribution system that cannot see beyond money. The film is presented by Anurag Kashyap and Nagraj Manjule. Incidentally, it is Manjule's hard-hitting Fandry that emboldened Kamble to tell his own story in a manner that does not resor to any manner of soft-pedalling.

Fourteen-year-old Gopinath Chavan (Samarth Sonawane) accompanies his grandmother to religious discourses. At one such gathering, he hears a story about a deity who emerged from cow dung. He asks his granny: Wasn't he stinking? No, she replies. He is a god and, therefore, smelled like musk, she adds.

Nothing could be further from Gopi's circumstances than stories of gods in which all impediments are magically wished away, but the teenager becomes obsessed with how he smells after all the hours he spends cleaning toilets, helping his alcoholic father cut up bodies in a hospital morgue and burying the unclaimed dead.

With his classmate and best friend Adim (Shravan Upalakar), he resolves to acquire musk, make a perfume from it and dispel the stink around him. That is a tall order for the two boys.

Raising the money to buy musk from a local supplier is the biggest challenge. But Gopi, egged on by Adim, resolves to find a way to get what he wants. He has had enough of the troubles that his caste identity has caused him.

Discrimination is an inescapable everyday fact of Gopi's life. In the film's opening sequence, we see him in his school uniform cleaning a toilet. His vial of perfume is empty but the boy cannot bring himself to throw it away.

His classmates subject him to casteist slurs. One of them sees him help an older cousin, Mangal (Ajay Chavan), clean gutters. Gopi is mocked at school the next day. Mangal nearly suffocates to death in a septic tank but, unsurprisingly, he himself is blamed for the near-tragedy.

His school education is impeded when his debt-ridden father loses his job at the morgue. The doctor enlists Gopi as his assistant, a job that leaves him with no time to attend classes. He insists that he wants to focus on his studies but his mother, Asha (Vaishali Kendale), tells him that marks do not feed anybody, work does.

No matter how much you study, you will still be a sweeper, she says to Gopi. The screen goes blank at this point and remains dark for a while. So, is this where it is all going to end for the academically gifted Gopi? As the opportunities slip away, Gopi can only rue his fate.

In one scene, Asha rips a textbook into two when Gopi refuses to miss school and go to work. He is not at liberty to defy his mother. The work that Gopi does in the morgue is obviously not pleasant. But Kamble does not show limbs and body parts, using sound effects instead to convey the chilling mature of the post mortems that Gopi assists his father and then the doctor with.

Trips to a shop of perfumes owned by Adim's uncle are a source of excitement, no matter how short-lived, for Gopi. All through the 100-minute Kastoori, Adim is by Gopi's side, lifting his spirits or giving him a reality check. The world them is unforgiving, but the duo does not give up.

Marathi is the language of the village but Gopi and Adim communicate in Hindi with each other. Gopi's family, too, speaks Hindi. Othering has several layers and several reasons. Caste, religion, language, profession - the two boys have to contend with many degrees of separation. But they soldier on cheerfully.

Gopi wins a Sanskrit essay writing competition. The prize ceremony is scheduled for Republic Day. Adim is thrilled to bits but Gopi isn't sure he'd be able to make it to school. He does not have much time to acquire the musk that he is looking for.

Much of Kastoori's power springs from its eschewal of fancy technical flourishes. It is a simple film about a complex reality. The first-time director knows exactly what he is out to articulate. He uses his resources, including the two young actors, with kind of skill and precision that belies his lack of experience.

Opinion: Karnataka Momentum Lost, Congress And INDIA Need New Narrative

The first big takeaway for the Congress, and the opposition as a whole, from the results in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana is that the post-Karnataka momentum is lost, or at least has taken a huge hit.

Despite the fact that it was only one state, the scale of victory in Karnataka in May 2023, gave the Congress a bounce and bolstered the opposition. The BJP seems to have snatched that with its emphatic victories in the Hindi heartland.

The Telangana win for the Congress is just consolation in the broader national context. Even there the numbers for the Congress are just five more than the half-way mark - 64 for the Congress and one for its ally. That is cause for nervousness.

Given the recent history of defections and governments being toppled, the Congress will have to watch its back in Hyderabad. There is no room for any friction over the choice of chief minister.

This is exactly why the party is in a hurry to stake its claim to form a government in Telangana.

Be that as it may, the loss for the Congress nationally will reflect in the power equations within the INDIA grouping. Post-Karnataka, the Congress was buoyed to play the role of the glue and the leading force in bringing the INDIA grouping together.

There were murmurs of unhappiness among strong regional players over the power equations. For instance, the push for a caste census wasn't a collective decision; the Trinamool Congress was not convinced it was the right way forward.

Further, the fact that the INDIA grouping could not come together for the assembly polls, and the acerbic language used by Congress leader Kamal Nath - the Congress's Chief Ministerial face in Madhya Pradesh - were not exactly team-bonding moves.

In hindsight, the Congress could have publicly reprimanded Kamal Nath and put up a strong message against the slighting of allies. It should have sacrificed more of its interests in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh to accommodate allies and ensure the alliance was strengthened.

The Trinamool has already said the results show the need for collective leadership and consultation with senior leaders.

These comments will gain strength and the Congress will now have to play an equal in the alliance. The results weaken its position considerably.

There was only a southern silver lining - the INDIA grouping will now control Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram. But the BJP, which has already forged an alliance with the Janata Dal Secular (JDS) in Karnataka, may look to pacts with parties like the BRS, YSR Congress Party or even the TDP and its estranged ally AIADMK.

Such alliances could be consequential in 2024. While the INDIA grouping and the Congress cannot take the southern story for granted, without a stronger narrative they can't even begin to script a story in the Hindi heartland for 2024.

For the moment, regional allies will have to do the heavy lifting and the Congress needs to find a stronger narrative. State-specific narratives where it's taking the BJP head on without ignoring the smallest of small players.

Arshdeep Reveals Surya's Message Before Final Over Heroics In 5th T20I

Arshdeep Singh felt that it was simply divine intervention and unhinged faith from his skipper Suryakumar Yadav which enabled him to defend 10 runs in the final over of a thrilling fifth T20 International, wherein India pipped Australia by just six runs. The left-arm seamer has been profligate at the death in T20Is for more than one year and after giving away 37 runs in his first three overs on Sunday, no one would have thought that he would be able to defend just 10 with the dangerous Matthew Wade on strike.

"I gave away too many runs but God gave me another chance and the support staff believed in me. To be honest, nothing was going in my mind. Surya bhai told me whatever has to happen will happen," a beaming Arshdeep said at the end of the match, having nailed those block-hole deliveries, giving away only three runs.

On his own bowling, he said, "A lot of lessons learnt but I will come back from the mistakes."

Skipper Surya felt that the young team ticked all boxes in a comprehensive series win by 4-1 margin.

"It was a good series. The way the boys showed their skills was commendable. We wanted to be fearless, we wanted to enjoy when we were in the middle. I told them, "do whatever is right and just enjoy your game," and they did the same. So very happy with that." Surya admitted that had there been Washington Sundar to support the two spinners, they would have won more easily as pitch assisted slow bowlers.

"If he (Washington Sundar) would have been there it'd have been an add-on. At Chinnaswamy, 200 is easier to chase. 160-175 is a tricky told here. After 10 overs, I told the boys that we have a game on." Player of the match Axar Patel had no hesitation in admitting that it was fun to bowl on a track with no dew to make life easy for batters.

"Today was fun. There was dew in the first four matches. Today, it was a tailor-made wicket for me. After a couple of games, I was able to find my rhythm." Having already bowled alongside Ravi Bishnoi in a few Syed Mushtaq Ali games for Gujarat, it became easier to operate in tandem, the senior spinner said.

"We played a few games together for Gujarat as well. We complement each other, hope this partnership grows." Bishnoi, the 'Player of the series' said that he didn't want to pitch it up as there was a chance to get hit.

"My plan is simple - bowling stump to stump works, just short of length works, pitching it up can be hit. I wanted to be a typical leg-spinner by bringing the long-on up." The challenge will be different on away tour to South Africa, a place where he played the U19 World Cup in 2020.

"South Africa will throw different pitches so but I'll try to attack there too." PTI KHS KHS DDV

Pakistan Cricketer Names Greatest India Batter. It's Not Sachin Or Virat

Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli are arguably two of the greatest batters of all time. Nearly every top batting record is held by the two India greats. In Test cricket, Tendulkar hold the record of scoring most number of centuries (51), while Kohli recently surpassed him to become the batter with the most number of tons in ODIs. Tendulkar is also the leading scorer in Tests and ODIs, while Kohli holds the same record in the shortest format of the game.

However, out-of-favour Pakistan pacer Junaid Khan has labelled Rohit Sharma as the greatest Indian batter.

When asked to choose either Tendulkar or Kohli as the greatest Indian batter, Junaid, instead, went for the current Indian team captain, Rohit.

"I am going to say Rohit Sharma (when asked who's the better batter between Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli). He has all kinds of shots in his arsenal. Virat is a great player. But the way Sachin batted in a different era, he would have scored more than 100 centuries in today's time. Everybody calls Rohit 'The Hitman' because of his incredible 264. He has also scored multiple double hundreds (in ODIs). This is rare, because he has done it more than once. He has also hit the most number of sixes," Junaid said on Nadir Ali Podcast.

After the T20 World Cup in 2022, Rohit had actually been reluctant to play the shortest format as he focused on 50-over cricket.

Earlier this week, Rohit's request to the BCCI for a break from white-ball cricket in South Africa despite being offered T20 captaincy has been accepted, while Jasprit Bumrah has been named his deputy for the two Tests starting December 26.

"Rohit has been offered T20 captaincy but he is in UK on a holiday and wants an extended break after four months of gruelling season till end of the World Cup. But as captain, he has the highest respect for the dressing room and if he agrees to lead India in T20 World Cup, he will lead," a BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity.

Review: Ranbir Delivers Powerful Performance In Tiresome Animal

A surfeit of everything - length, violence, love, obsession and toxicity - and shrill drama designed to trigger trauma - that is what Animal, written, directed and edited by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, peddles. The sickeningly violent father-son action drama rarely pauses for breath.

The older man's wife pipes up once in a while in an attempt to get a word in edgewise but fails miserably. The husband shuts her up. The son's wife has much more to say, but all the vacuous verbiage that she foists upon her husband - and the audience - is just that, vacuous verbiage.

Mixed with bushels of superficial style, the unbridled excess of the Ranbir Kapoor starrer just goes on and on, deigning to stop at absolutely nothing. When the hero's elder sister is ragged in college, he, a schoolboy with a pathological sense of entitlement, barges into her classroom with a gun and fires several rounds.

His father ticks him off sternly and even calls him a criminal. But the boy is beyond chastisement. He believes that it is perfectly fine for a man to stand up for his sister when she is in trouble. The rest of the noxious film offers a litany of excuses for a protagonist who is clearly in need of psychiatric care.

Ranbir Kapoor  delivers a powerful performance that is supported with customary elan by Anil Kapoor. But because the film is propelled in the main by problematic means and instincts, the efforts of the two stars can only go abegging. You want to look away when the two are peddling their wares.

The story of a boy's manic adoration for his super wealthy industrialist-father who does not have the time to reciprocate the overflowing filial ardour is nearly three and a half hours long. But that is only one of the reasons why Animal is an exhausting film. In every which way, it is an all-out assault on the senses.

Animal is the kind of film that would have us believe that it is no big deal for a loving son to go berserk when it comes to tackling those who threaten the well-being of his dad and his two sisters. Since danger seems to lurk over the family at every corner, he has the licence to be as boorish as he wants to be.

The protagonist (Ranbir Kapoor) goes hell for leather, spills tons of blood, kills tens of people and blows hot and hotter when he figures out that a conspiracy is indeed afoot to eliminate the patriarch and rob his family of the steel plant that it owns.

Even in love, there is no room for niceties for this my-way-or-the-highway guy. He does not so much as fall in love as make a grab for it. He does not propose marriage. He literally demands it.

All that he appears to be interested in is unquestioning allegiance from the girl, Geetanjali (Rashmika Mandanna), who he had the hots for as a schoolboy but hasn't met since his angry dad, Balbir Singh, packed him off to the US in the hope of seeing him turn a new leaf.

But nothing changes. Ranvijay Singh is back and he is worse than ever before. The lady plays along without a whimper. Not only does she not demonstrate any sort of willpower of her own, she also seems to be thrilled at the prospect of being swept away from her engagement party and hustled into a marriage against her parents' wishes. He own does not count for much.

Not that she does not have a voice but her utterances and positions are mere reactions to what the man in her life does entirely of his own volition and then feigns that his actions are consensual. When he strays from his wife and develops a bond with another girl (Triptii Dimri), he proffers the kind of untenable logic that only a man like him can.

If the hero is the way that he is, can the antagonist (Bobby Deol, who struggles to make an impact in a severely abbreviated appearance) be any different? He is not. The bad guy - he lives in faraway Scotland and pretty much does whatever his damaged heart desires - pops up after Animal has run well over half its course.

Not to be left behind, the vicious villain spares no effort to prove that he is as bloodthirsty as Ranvijay Singh, the scion of the business group that owns Swastik Steel. The two men are caught in a deadly blood feud. A vile attack on Balbir Singh (Anil Kapoor) by men who want to wrest control of the ageing tycoon's business empire elicits a reprisal so venomous that is triggers an unending cycle of violence.

To justify that it is a man's world, Animal presents two men who are as physically impaired as they are mentally scarred. One loses all sense of taste and smell and is unable to hear after sustaining six bullet wounds that push his heart to the brink of collapse.

The other cannot speak. He communicates with the help of a brother who serves as a sign language interpreter. When the two men square off in the climax - it is, like such clashes usually are in vengeance sagas of this sort, staged on the tarmac of an airstrip.

If you think that the physical shortcomings that the warring pair has to deal with are meant to be seen as a metaphor for what men of their ilk lack, banish that thought. Everything that the hero does in order to ensure that he has his way is backed up with an odious justification. What motive could be greater, Animal seems to ask the audience, than a man's desire to win the attention of his distracted father?

If there is anything at all that can be deemed to be a takeaway from this off-putting and tiresome film, it is the background music. The gratuitously gory action sequences are accompanied on the soundtrack by folksy songs - Marathi, Punjabi, the works.

One action scene has a whistled tune to go with it, another has a piece played on a string instrument. Music, unfortunately, is the last thing that Animal is likely to leave you with as you troop out of the theatre wondering what all the deadening din was about.

Narayan Murthy Suggests 3-Shift Work For Infrastructure Sector Employees

Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy has said that the government needs to complete infrastructure projects on priority and emphasised the need for three working shifts instead of one. Mr Murthy's comment came while discussing the requirement for Bengaluru's development in the next 5-10 years.

"Completing the Electronics City Metro and expanding to other areas, where there are a lot of companies located, must be prioritised," Mr Murthy said during a fireside chat with Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath at the Bengaluru Tech Summit held on November 29.

He urged the infrastructure industry to move beyond the traditional one-shift, "They should not work just one shift, come 11 am and go at 5 pm."

He said that people in nations with ambitious aspirations often operate on two work shifts. He said if India embraced a similar approach, it could surpass China's growth. "Elsewhere in the nation with high aspirations, people work - I have seen two shifts because I would return around midnight. And I've seen people working as if they're going to disappear tomorrow morning. So, while I cannot vouch for three shifts there, I can vouch for two shifts," he said.

Murthy said, "Now if we want to be better than all those countries, why don't we say our people will work three shifts? Ask them what the requirements are for them to complete their work by working three shifts, and provide them with that. I think there is a little bit of these things that can be done by our leaders. And if we did that, then I have no doubt why India cannot grow even faster than China, not just in growth alone. Our base is only 3.5 trillion, whereas China's is 19 trillion. But we will catch up with China, and hopefully, one day we can overtake China. But that requires making quick decisions, ensuring that all hurdles for entrepreneurs like you and others today, I'm not an entrepreneur, are removed as if there is no tomorrow," he said.

Watch the video here:

Mr Murthy listed three things during the fireside chat including English medium schools for talented resources for the city's software industry, focus on infrastructure, and quick decision-making by the government.

He also said that Bengaluru contributes about 35-37 % of the total software exports from India. "So what it means is that you are looking at about 75 billion dollars from just Bengaluru if you look at 200 billion dollar total exports from India."

His comments sparked a debate among users on social media.

"Give triple the salary other nations are giving triple the salaries," a user wrote.

"Follow salary structure wise talking doesn't make any sense," another user wrote.

"With all due respect. Please stop making such irrelevant statements," the third user wrote.

Earlier, Mr Murthy sparked a debate online after making a remark that "youngsters should work 70 hours a week if India wants to compete with economies that have made tremendous progress in the last two to three decades."

"Matter Of Concern": India On US Alleging Official's Role In Murder Plot

Responding to questions on an alleged plot from India to murder US-based Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the External Affairs Ministry today said it is a "matter of concern" and reiterated that New Delhi has launched a high-level probe into the charges. The ministry's spokesperson Arindam Bagchi was responding to the media's questions on allegations that an Indian government employee worked with Indian national Nikhil Gupta and others in a plot to assassinate Pannun, who leads Khalistani outfit Sikhs for Justice. "As regards the case against an individual that has been filed in a US court, allegedly linking him to an Indian official, this is a matter of concern. We have said that this is also contrary to government policy," Mr Bagchi said.

Planes Losing GPS Signal Over Middle-East, Indian Regulator Raises Concern

Concerned over reports that civilian aircrafts may sometimes be flying blind over parts of the Middle East, the civil aviation regulator DGCA has issued an advisory to all Indian airlines. There have been several reports in recent days that navigation systems of civilian aircrafts are being spoofed when they fly over parts of the Middle East. This is fast emerging as a major safety hazard and the DGCA advisory aims to alert airlines of the nature of the threat and how to respond to it.

"The aviation industry is grappling with uncertainties due to new threats and reports of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) jamming and spoofing," the circular states.

The report takes note of "increasing reports of GNSS interference over airspace in the Middle East in the recent past" and calls for the development of contingency measures to deal with the jamming of navigation systems. The DGCA has also sought the creation of a threat monitoring and analysis network.

In late September, multiple commercial flights near Iran went off-course after their navigation systems went blind. One of the aircraft, which fell victim to spoofing, ended up almost flying into Iranian airspace without permission.

According to OpsGroup, a group of professional pilots, flight dispatchers, schedulers, and controllers have flagged the issue.

How Does The Spoofing Work?

The planes flying over parts of the Middle East initially receive a spoofed GPS signal. This signal is aimed at fooling the aircraft's in-built system into thinking that they are flying miles away from their intended route. The signal is often strong enough to compromise the integrity of the aircraft's system.

The result is that within minutes, the inertial reference system (IRS) becomes unstable and in many cases, the plane loses all navigation capability.

Which Are The Areas Of Concern?

The primary area of concern is a busy airway in Northern Iraq and Azerbaijan with several incidents being reported near Erbil.

By September, 12 separate incidents had been reported with the latest one being reported near Ankara, Turkey on November 20.

Who Is The Culprit?

While no one culprit has been identified, it is believed that jamming and spoofing may be happening because of the deployment of military electronic warfare systems in areas where there is regional tension.

What Does The DGCA Circular Recommend?

The DGCA circular is based on recommendations of the committee for tackling the emerging threat considering the best practices, latest developments, and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) guidance on the matter.

It provides comprehensive mitigation measures and action plans for aircraft operators, pilots, ANSP, and air traffic controllers which includes the development of contingency procedures in coordination with equipment manufacturers, and the assessment of operational risk by conducting a safety risk assessment.

It also provides a mechanism to establish a threat monitoring and analysis network in close coordination with DGCA for preventive as well as reactive threat monitoring and analysis of reports of GNSS interference to generate valuable insights with data and new developments so as to have robust and immediate threat response.

"I'm Safe, How Are Parents": Worker's Chat With Brother From Tunnel

Rescue teams in Uttarakhand are racing against time to evacuate 41 construction workers who have been trapped for 10 days following a tunnel collapse.

In a significant breakthrough, the rescuers were able to send a camera to the trapped workers early this morning and capture their visuals for the first time, providing some relief to their families.

The images were captured by an endoscopic flexi camera pushed through a six-inch pipe inserted through the rubble last night to send food for them.

Rescue officials were seen speaking to the workers through Walkie Talkies or radio handsets. The camera and walkie-talkie connection with the workers is a significant development in the long-drawn rescue operation.

It has been an agonising wait for the families keeping vigil outside the tunnel.

The brother of one of the workers said he was able to speak to him briefly. "He told me that they are safe. He also asked me about our parents," Vikram Singh told NDTV.

Mr Singh said officials had assured the families that the workers would be rescued soon.

Vikram's brother Pushkar Singh is one of the 41 men trapped inside the tunnel since November 12, when a portion of the tunnel caved in.

He said Pushkar had been working at the site for about two and a half months. "We found out that he was stuck in the tunnel four days after the incident, when his friend called us," Mr Singh said.

The workers' prolonged confinement in the tunnel has raised serious concerns about their health and well-being.

Doctors have also emphasised the need for comprehensive rehabilitation for the trapped workers, fearing that the prolonged confinement may necessitate both mental and physical recovery processes.

Rescuers said significant progress had been achieved as a vertical drilling machine had reached the tunnel from the top. It took 13 hours and three vehicles to bring the machine to the spot, a driver told news agency ANI.

On Australia's World Cup Win, Pak Great's 'Pitch' Swipe At 'Timid' India

The Cricket World Cup final is over and the analysis of Indian cricket team's loss has already started. Despite being the best team in the Cricket World Cup 2023 till the semi-final stage, the Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team could not pass the final hurdle and lost to Australia. Both in the bowling and batting departments, the Pat Cummins-led Australia were the better side. India failed to post a competitive total and were restricted to 240 while Australia reached the target with seven overs to spare.

Pakistan pace great Shoaib Akhtar congratulated India on their entry into the final but added that the pitch for the Cricket World Cup final left a lot to be desired.

"India did not reach the final by luck. They made it to the final by playing brilliantly and they fought well. However, I was a bit disappointed with the pitch used for the game. I wish India prepared a better pitch and had not gone with a timid approach. You have red soiled pitch. Had there been more bounce and pace, the toss would not have played such a big role. India could have done better,” the ex-cricketer said in a video shared on his YouTube channel.

"I want to congratulate India for playing in the World Cup final. It is not an easy feat to achieve. They reached here by decimating other teams. Unfortunately, they always fall short in such matches. In the last 12 years or so, we have seen that they come very close to winning the trophy but somehow fail to do so. Luck has not favoured Team India. The Australians have got great nerves, they know how to control it."

Indian cricket team coach Rahul Dravid also said, in the post match presentation, that the nation should be proud of its players.

"I think there will be some disappointment but I think they got to watch the Indian team play and have a fantastic campaign right through the World Cup. I said that at the start of the tournament, that we'd be traveling to, we eventually went to 11 cities, played in front of our fans, truly grateful for the kind of support that we received," he said.

"Every single venue we went to was packed. People came out to watch. It was a great privilege to play in front of our fans and I thought the team did really well and really entertained the fans. So, while there may be some disappointments today, I think there's a lot of joy that this team has given to the people over the last couple of months.

"It was a privilege, I think, this tournament, just to see. I think there's no doubt that the fans of the subcontinent are truly great fans. They make this game the great game that it is, without a doubt. And what would we do without the fans in the subcontinent? And I think for us to be able to play in front of them and to entertain them and to play the brand of cricket that I think a lot of people really enjoyed watching was a privilege. So yeah, of course there's disappointment. Everyone wants us to win. There's disappointment. There's more disappointment in our dressing room than anywhere else. But like I said, there's a lot of positives to reflect on as well."

"Buying Australia?" What Satya Nadella Said When Asked About India's Loss

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is a cricket fan. He was among the millions of cricket fans glued to their screens on Wednesday, witnessing India's commanding 70-run victory over New Zealand in the World Cup semi-final. However, India lost to Australia in the finals and this broke the hearts of millions of Indian cricket team's fans and supporters. Amid this, Mr Nadella was asked if he was planning to buy Australia after India's loss. This comes as Microsoft made the announcement to hire Sam Altman, who was fired from his position as the CEO of OpenAI, which is backed by Microsoft.

He made an appearance on Kara Swisher's podcast and discussed the dramatic weekend at OpenAI. During the interview, the host asked the Microsoft CEO about the World Cup loss."The India and Australia cricket thing, I'm so sorry for you there, but are you thinking of buying Australia now?" the host jokingly asked him. To this, Mr Nadella said, "That would be like buying OpenAI. None of those can be accomplished, but we can partner well with OpenAI and enjoy Aussies playing cricket."

Satya Nadella had closely watched the final match of the ICC Men's ODI World Cup. In a post on X, he congratulated the Aussies and appreciated the hard work of the Rohit Sharma-led team. "Congratulations to Australia on winning the World Cup! Great run to the finals, India," he said.

The Microsoft Chief has been vocal about his love for cricket and stated that the sport taught him teamwork and leadership that helped him rise through the twists and turns of the corporate world. "I think playing cricket taught me more about working in teams and leadership that has stayed with me throughout my career," he said after his appointment as Microsoft CEO was announced.

Meanwhile, Announcing Microsoft's move to hire the former OpenAI Chief, Mr Nadella posted on X, "We remain committed to our partnership with OpenAI and have confidence in our product roadmap, our ability to continue to innovate with everything we announced at Microsoft Ignite, and in continuing to support our customers and partners. We look forward to getting to know Emmett Shear and OAI's new leadership team and working with them."

With this move, Microsoft's shares rose about 1.5%, with the company on track to add nearly $30 billion to its market value at current levels. That was nearly equal to the valuation OpenAI commanded in its last fundraise.

"They Reek Of Perversion": Chiranjeevi On Comments By Mansoor About Trisha

Actor Mansoor Ali Khan's distasteful remarks about his Leo co-star, actress Trisha Krishnan, have drawn criticism and ire from all quarters. After the likes of Leo director Lokesh Kanagaraj, singer Chinmayi Sripada, and actress Malavika Mohanan, Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi has strongly condemned Mansoor Ali Khan's comments. The legend, in a post on X [formerly Twitter], shared that Mansoor's comments “reek of perversion”. In his message, Chiranjeevi said, “My attention was drawn to some reprehensible comments made by actor Mansoor Ali Khan about Trisha.  The comments are distasteful and disgusting not just for an Artiste but for any woman or girl. These comments must be condemned in the strongest words. They reek of perversion. I stand with Trisha  and every woman who has to be subject to such horrid comments.”

The message was reposted by Trisha with the note, “Thank you Chiru Sir.”

For the unversed, during a video interview in Tamil, Mansoor Ali Khan said, “When I heard that I was acting with Trisha, I thought there would be a bedroom scene in the film. I thought that I could carry her to the bedroom just like I did with other actresses in my earlier movies. I have done so many rape scenes in a number of movies and it's not new to me. But these guys didn't even show Trisha to me on the sets during the Kashmir schedule,” as per ANI.

Reacting to the video, Trisha wrote, “A recent video has come to my notice where Mr Mansoor Ali Khan has spoken about me in a vile and disgusting manner. I strongly condemn this and find it sexist, disrespectful, misogynistic, repulsive and in bad taste. He can keep wishing but I am grateful never to have shared screen space with someone as pathetic as him and I will make sure it never happens for the rest of my film career as well. People like him bring a bad name to mankind.”

After outrage over the interview grew louder, Mansoor Ali Khan issued a statement that said: “Ah… My kids informed me that they had heard on the news that I had mistreated Trisha in the press meet. To be honest, I complimented her at that press conference. In Leo, Trisha is treated similarly to how Hanuman moved the mountain Chiranjeevi. I made the comment in jest. Some have purposefully sliced it and presented it to Trisha in an alternative format. I am not the kind of person who is afraid of all this fuss. Today, politicians in prominent positions are among the heroines who have collaborated with me. Several of the heroines settled down and married wealthy businessmen.”

Adding that his daughter is a Trisha fan, Mansoor Ali Khan said, “My daughter Dil Rupa is a huge fan of yours. I also have two more daughters. They want to get married. I have to support that. Those who have acted with me know very well how I respect women. Some people have angered Trisha by misrepresenting this. There is much work to be done in the world. So, focus on your work. Thank you!”

However, social media users have expressed disappointment with Mansoor Ali Khan over his initial statements and the subsequent explanation. While the Tamil film industry's Nadigar Sangam has temporarily banned Mansoor Ali Khan, he has refused to apologise to Trisha for his comments.

Leo, headlined by Thalapathy Vijay and Trisha, was released in theatres on October 19. Meanwhile, Chiranjeevi and Trisha have worked together in the 2006 film Stalin.

'Though Rohit Has 30+ Tons...': India Great Lauds Kohli's 'Hell' Of A Feat

Batting maestro Virat Kohli has made one "hell of a record" by smashing his 50th ODI hundred but there is no one getting close to the milestone by a far distance, believes Indian great Gundappa Viswanath. Kohli eclipsed Sachin Tendulkar's 49 ODI hundreds during his 117 against New Zealand in the World Cup semifinal on Wednesday to propel India into the final for the first time since 2011. "Sometime back, I had said that if at all anyone can come closer to Sachin's 100s, it will be Kohli. I didn't expect that he is going to break it," Viswanath told PTI during an interview.

"His consistency, I mean, all are talking about his hundreds but the way he has been getting 70s and 80s, any batsman will take that. It is (only) because of his consistency that he got 50-plus scores. The way he approaches his cricket, he has a lot of cricket in him.

"There are not many who can come closer, even though Rohit (Sharma) has around 30 plus hundreds, so (there is) still a long way (to go) for him, but rest I can't pinpoint somebody is there to come close. He has achieved one hell of a thing scoring one more than Sachin,” he said.

Besides 50 ODI centuries, Kohli also has 29 hundreds in Tests and one in T20Is for a total of 80 scores above 100.

During the semifinal, Kohli also became the first batter ever to break the 700-run barrier in a single World Cup edition with one more game to go.

"I am not comparing him with Sachin because they are two different cricketers, (there are) no comparisons but both are great, absolutely legends. The best part is they know what they are doing. Sachin knew what he was doing and Kohli said he is my guru and he is going along the way,” he said.

“It is amazing, Kohli's batting,” Viswanath said.

Tendulkar scored 49 tons in ODIs and 51 centuries in Tests and is the only batter till date to have a century of hundreds to his name.

Can Kohli break Tendulkar's record of making a hundred international tons? "Well, it all depends on how many Test matches we play. Few are coming up with South Africa and England, you can't get 100s in all the matches but he is capable of scoring. We will have to see," he said.
