"Bhai Ashram Hai Ye" - Kohli Politely Asks Fans To Not Film Video

Not a part of India's T20I series against New Zealand, Virat Kohli's next assignment is the big Border-Gavaskar Trophy which is to begin on February 09. The star India batter, along with his wife Anushka Sharma, has been travelling during this period of break. Before the training sessions for the Test assignment against Australia begin, Virat was spotted in a spiritual place in Uttarakhand, along with his wife Anushka. The pictures and videos of the couple's visit have flooded the internet.

As per claims made by fans on social media, the couple visited the Swami Dayanand Ji Maharaj's samadhi at Swami Dayanand Ashram in Rishikesh. Considering the popularity that Kohli has, the cricketer was surrounded by fans and asked to sign a few autographs. In a video that has been shared on Twitter, Virat could be seen signing a cricket ball. Here's the video:

Earlier, several photos surfaced online in which the two were seen offering prayers at an ashram in Vrindavan.

Anushka and Virat were in Dubai for the New Year's before their Vrindavan trip. Only a few days remain before Kohli would return to the cricket field, resuming his on-field responsibilities.

Kohli has been in fine touch over the past few weeks, scoring ODI 3 centuries (one against Bangladesh and two against Sri Lanka). In the 50-over assignment against New Zealand, however, the talismanic batter could only score a total of 55 runs in three matches.

Having broken his century drought in ODIs and T20Is, Kohli would now be determined to reach the triple-digit score in Tests too as India take on Australia in a 4-match series.

On Camera, Huge Clash At Ajmer Shrine Between Pilgrims, Officials

A huge fight broke out between two groups of people at the Ajmer Sharif Dargah today in Rajasthan, witnesses said. The clash reportedly happened after a group belonging to the Barelvi sect, which was there to attend the urs (death anniversary) at the dargah of Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti, raised slogans in favour of the Barelvi sect.

The Khadims (custodians and servers) of the dargah were angered by the slogans of another sect, which led to a clash between the two groups.

Video clips from the incident show two huge groups of people trading blows.

The dargah administration stepped in and tried to sort out the matter, and the local police also controlled the situation.

The pilgrims who had raised slogans in favour of the Barelvi sect managed to flee amid the chaos. No police case has been registered.

Opinion: Opinion: Gautam Adani Strikes Back. Can He Win The Perception War?

Gautam Adani, the tycoon under attack by a New York-based short-seller, has outdone his accuser 4:1: The rebuttal put out by his group Sunday night in India runs into 413 pages. Hindenburg Research's allegations of stock-price manipulation and accounting fraud were contained in a 106-page report, which has now been denounced by the conglomerate as "nothing short of a calculated securities fraud under applicable law." Is the response, backed by the claim that the group may pursue remedies, as weighty as it is voluminous? Perhaps it doesn't really matter.

That's because the fate of Adani's vast corporate empire will be decided by what sounds like a rounding error for one of the world's wealthiest businessmen: In the ongoing 200 billion rupee ($2.5 billion) public offer by the group's flagship, large anchor investors have already been allotted about 60 billion rupees of shares at the top end of the per-share price band of 3,112 rupees to 3,276 rupees. But following the Hindenburg report, the Adani Enterprises Ltd. stock nosedived by nearly 20% over two trading days last week and closed at slightly above 2,761 rupees on Friday. (The shares were up as much as 10% in early trade in Mumbai on Monday.)

In other words, the firm is asking investors to buy something from it that's available in the market for less. Institutions and high-net-worth individuals might still pick up their assigned quotas ~CHECK~ after all, a failure of the share sale could dent investor confidence in India and cause huge collateral damage to the rest of their portfolio. The only constituency that remains to be convinced is retail, who need to put up 70 billion rupees, or less than $1 billion.

Even if there are some small investors out there who want to make up their minds after digesting Adani's answers to the 88 questions posed by the short-seller, odds are they won't be able to. At least not by Tuesday, when the public offer closes in India. They have to take a leap of faith by ignoring the beaten-down price. They'll assume that professional investors, analysts and the media are weighing the evidence. But with Hindenburg coming up with another note, in which it says Adani has failed to specifically answer 62 of its 88 questions, there's just too much information to process quickly. That will force people to judge the situation according to their prior political beliefs. "Fraud cannot be obfuscated by nationalism," says Hindenburg. Nationalism, however, can shift the perception battle. And that's what matters right now.

If the subscriptions come in and the share sale concludes, the beleaguered Indian billionaire gets the breathing room to take out the shorts. Most Indian market participants I spoke to over the weekend believe that funding commitments will eventually come through. Adani, on last count, was personally worth around $93 billion. As one veteran investor in Indian markets mused in a phone conversation, "How can Adani be the country's most powerful business magnate and not manage to raise less than a billion dollars? I can hold one of those two opinions, not both."

Still, it's a tricky situation: Adani has denied reports that it's thinking of extending the public offer or lowering the issue price. Those tactics could have ramifications beyond stock markets. The businessman from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state of Gujarat is a huge investor in India's ports, airports, roads, data centers, grain storage silos and solar farms. The government in New Delhi, looking to give a final push to infrastructure in Wednesday's annual budget, would have to rethink its economic strategy ahead of next year's general elections if political opponents pounce on Modi. If the share offer flops (or even wobbles), there could be a public uproar over the entanglement of nation's state-owned banks and life insurer in the debt and equity of a highly leveraged tycoon.

With so much riding on one share sale, it's easy to see why Hindenburg went public with its report last week. It's unclear just how large the short positions are, and who's behind them. Hindenburg's report only discloses that they are overseas in "U.S.-traded bonds and non-Indian-traded derivatives, along with other non-Indian-traded reference securities." That, too, is a clever strategy. Within India, any bet on a stock price to fall must be implemented by borrowing shares: So-called naked short sales aren't permitted. Company managements can pick bearish bets and squeeze them out. Holding on to a position for any length of time through local derivatives could also be prohibitively expensive.

Things can be much easier if, for instance, a large family office based overseas decides to put real money behind Hindenburg's report outside India. It could go short via a dollar-denominated total-return swap taken from the trading desk of a mid-sized international bank. (Large financial institutions may not want to jeopardize their India franchises for bespoke deals like these that may upset the regulator in India).

Whatever the modus operandi behind the short sales, so far it seems to be working: The group has lost $50 billion in stock-market value over two trading days. Last week's plunge in its dollar bonds accelerated on Monday morning. Clearly, bond traders aren't entirely convinced by Adani Group's response. Or perhaps, the fixed-income market, too, is assessing the domestic share sale, the one domino Adani can't allow to fall. All weapons are legitimate in what's shaping up as an epic battle for public opinion - including information overload.

Ladakh Innovator Says Detained After Fast, Officials Deny Allegation

Ladakh's top environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk today alleged that he has been detained by the Union Territory's administration after his protest fast demanding special status for Leh. Authorities, however, denied any detention. Mr Wangchuk had yesterday said the administration wants to "silence him" for the protest against the destruction of the region's ecology and unsustainable development.

The Union Territory administration said he wanted to protest in Khardung La, permission for which was denied.

The Ladakh administration wants Mr Wangchuk to sign a bond promising not to make any statements for a month over the recent happenings in Leh. He is not to participate in any public gatherings, for a month, over the recent developments in Leh, now bristling with protests demanding special status under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, the bond adds.

Mr Wangchuk, 56, began his five-day fast on Thursday at Phyang, Leh, where the night temperature is minus 20 degrees Celsius. He earlier alleged he was placed under house arrest.

He had also tweeted a copy of what he claimed was the bond that he has been asked to sign to ensure he wouldn't make any statement or participate at public meetings for a month.

"I am under house arrest. In fact, quite worse than that. If you're under house arrest, you know the rules clearly, and you may even explore legal ways to counter it. But right now I am being kept at our institute and my movement is restricted," Mr Wangchuk, wrapped in a blanket amidst snow-capped mountains, told NDTV in a video statement.

He co-founded the Himalayan Institute of Alternative Ladakh, or HIAL, on whose grounds he has been fasting. Mr Wangchuk had planned his fast at Khardung La Pass, where the temperature could fall to minus 40 degree Celsius. He alleged the administration is trying to stop him from reaching Khardung La Pass.

Calling for preventive steps, he has said unsustainable industries, tourism, and commerce will continue to mushroom in Ladakh and finish the region eventually.

He has also asked the government to include the region in the 6th schedule of the Constitution, which allows administration of some tribal areas as autonomous entities.

Sonam Wangchuk's life had inspired Bollywood actor Aamir Khan's character in the 2009 film 3 Idiots. He also received the Magsaysay Award in 2018.

"Either Sex Sells Or Shah Rukh Khan": Neha Dhupia Recalls Old Statement

Actor Neha Dhupia, who has been constantly giving shout outs to Shah Rukh Khan and his latest release Pathaan did it once again. A Twitter user recently wrote: "Almost 2 decade back Neha Dhupia had given a statement 'only sex or Shah Rukh Khan sells' and that stays true even today! #Pathaan #Pathaan100crWorldwide #PathaanRoars." Responding to the tweet, the actress wrote: "20 years on, my statement rings true. This is not an "actor's career" but a "King's reign"! #KingKhan." Back in 2004, during the promotions of her film Julie, Neha Dhupia had said, "In today's time, either sex sells or Shah Rukh Khan."

Read Neha Dhupia's tweet here:

After watching Pathaan in theatres, Neha Dhupia wrote this in a tweet last week: "It was a packed house, there were whistles, there was cheer and our hearts rejoiced...We laughed on beat, we applauded on every dialogue and we jumped out of our seats on cue each time Pathaan kicked. Shah Rukh Khan, thank you for you...This is what cinematic victory looks like."

She added in the tweet: "Shah Rukh Khan, the love we have for you is hard to explain. Deepika Padukone, you set the screen on fire with your gaze and your kicks and tricks. John Abraham, you make bad look so good! Salman Khan, we would go back to the cinemas to watch the best cameo in history. Pathaan is here to stay."

In terms of box office, Pathaan has earned Rs 542 crore crore gross worldwide within 5 days of its release. Box office success aside, the film has been equally adept at impressing the critics. In his review for NDTV, film critic Saibal Chatterjee gave the film 3.5 stars out of 5 and he wrote: "Phenomenally entertaining and consistently engaging, Pathaan, for all the derivative genre components it compiles, is a spy thriller that crackles with energy."

Google Employee Laid Off While On Leave Caring For Sick Mother

Tech giant Google announced 12,000 job cuts globally this month. The recent layoffs have greatly impacted employees, prompting them to express their grief and share their stories about their time at the tech giant. Impacted by the job cuts, Paul Baker, who worked at Google as Video Production Manager, revealed he was fired while he was on carer's leave.

In a LinkedIn post, the former Google employee revealed that he had taken a month's leave to take care of his ailing mother, who was suffering from terminal cancer, according to an Insider report attached to his post. During his leave, he was informed by a friend about the layoffs. He then found his work laptop had been "cut off," following which he switched on his personal laptop to discover an email from the company saying he was being let go, as per the report.

According to his bio, Mr Baker joined Google in late 2018 and worked at the company's office in Venice, Los Angeles, as a video production manager.

Sharing his experience, Mr Baker wrote in the LinkedIn post, ''With the advent of 12k Google employee lay-offs on Friday and reading numerous hard-breaking/inspiring stories, I'm ready to share my story. While on carer's leave for my immediate family member's terminal cancer, I too was laid off. After the initial shock it morphed into sadness because I miss the people. I miss immersing myself into my Google career and culture.''

Despite all this, he still looks back fondly at his time at the company, saying he ''will miss it''.

''Through it all, I'm lucky & proud I played a pivotal role in creating scalable video and a wonderful community within Google. I'll truly miss it,'' he added.

In a similar story, a Google employee who gave birth to her second child on January 19 shared she was laid off while she was still in the hospital, holding her hours-old newborn baby. Another Google employee, who was laid off, revealed he worked as a recruiter at the company. He got to know about getting laid off when his call with a potential candidate was cut off abruptly.

Google last week announced it's making 12,000 roles redundant, becoming the latest tech major to cut jobs after years of growth. Chief executive officer (CEO) Sundar Pichai stressed the cuts were made after careful consideration and stated that Google will "support" employees as they look for other opportunities.

"We've decided to reduce our workforce by approximately 12,000 roles. We've already sent a separate email to employees in the US who are affected. In other countries, this process will take longer due to local laws and practices," Mr Pichai said in a statement.

UK PM Dismisses Conservative Party Chairman After Tax Probe

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Sunday fired Conservative party chairman Nadhim Zahawi after an inquiry into Zahawi's tax affairs found a "serious breach" of ministerial rules, the government said.

"As a result, I have informed you of my decision to remove you from your position in His Majesty's Government," Sunak wrote in a publicly released letter to his Iraqi-born ally, following a scandal that cast doubt on the premier's own judgement and vows of integrity.

The government also released the inquiry report by Sunak's newly appointed independent ethics advisor, Laurie Magnus.

Magnus pulled no punches in finding that Zahawi effectively lied to successive Conservative leaders when he came under investigation by the UK's tax authority, which led to the politician handing over a fine for late payment reportedly worth £5 million ($6.2 million).

Zahawi gave shifting explanations in the affair, and initially tried to silence journalists and a tax consultant with threats of libel lawsuits.

Sunak's decision to dismiss Zahawi, rather than invite him to resign with some saving of face, underlined the serious political stakes at play at a time when millions of Britons are struggling to pay the bills.

Sunak appointed Zahawi as Conservative party chairman, and cabinet minister without portfolio, when he entered 10 Downing Street in October, when he vowed to deliver "integrity, professionalism and accountability at every level".

Zahawi was previously in the cabinet under both Liz Truss and Boris Johnson -- who appointed him as chancellor of the exchequer, in ultimate charge of the UK tax agency.

The opposition Labour party said Sunak should have fired Zahawi immediately when the allegations emerged in newspaper reports this month, rather than seeking to buy time by asking Magnus to investigate.

The scandal underlined that Sunak was a "weak" prime minister, senior Labour MP Bridget Phillipson told Sky News.

"The stench of sleaze just hangs around the Conservative party," she said.

Sunak has faced questions himself about his family's tax affairs after it emerged that his wife Akshata Murty had for years enjoyed "non-domicile" status, which shielded her from paying UK taxes on her overseas income from her family's Infosys business group.

And last week he apologised for receiving his second police fine, after he was filmed not wearing a seatbelt in the back seat of a moving car.

As chancellor himself under Johnson, Sunak was fined along with the then prime minister for attending an illegal workplace party during a Covid lockdown.

The "partygate" scandal was one of several that brought down Johnson.

Sunak's vows of integrity were in sharp contrast to that record, but he remains stalked by his predecessor's dealings in government.

A separate probe is underway into reports that just before he was made chairman of the BBC by Johnson, former banker Richard Sharp was involved in securing a private credit line for up to £800,000 ($990,000) for the then-PM from a Canadian businessman.

"Appropriate Age For Motherhood Is 22 To 30 Years": Assam Chief Minister

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said women should embrace motherhood at the "appropriate age" as it otherwise leads to medical complications. Speaking at a government function here, Mr Sarma iterated his government's commitment to stop underage marriages and motherhood.

His comments come in the backdrop of the state government deciding to bring stringent laws and evoking the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act to check child marriages and underage motherhood.

"Thousands of husbands will be arrested in the next five-six months as it is a crime to have sexual relations with a girl below 14 years of age, even if he is her legally wed husband," Mr Sarma said.

The legal age for the marriage of a woman is 18 years and those who marry younger girls will also be brought to book. "Many (men who marry girls) could face life imprisonment," he said.

Speaking about motherhood, Mr Sarma said, "Women should not wait too long to become mothers as it leads to complications. The appropriate age for motherhood is 22 years to 30 years".

Women who have not married yet should do it soon, he said with a smile.

"We have been speaking against early motherhood. But at the same time, women should not wait too long either as many do ... God has created our bodies in a manner that there is an appropriate age for everything," he added.

The Assam cabinet on Monday decided to book men who marry girls below 14 years of age under the POCSO Act. Those who marry girls in the age group of 14-18 years will be tried under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.

The decision was taken to curb the high rate of maternal and infant mortality in the state, whose primary cause is child marriage, Sarma had said after the cabinet meeting.

An average of 31 per cent of the marriages in the state are in the prohibited age group, he said.

Ex-Google Employee Who Was Laid Off Reveals The "Worst Part"

A former Google employee has documented the moment she got to know she has been laid off by the tech giant. In a video uploaded on YouTube and TikTok, Nicole Tsai, who was a Program Manager at Google, revealed that she figured out she had been fired when she woke up to an "ominous" text message from her boss and found her access to the company properties had been cut off.

"I rushed downstairs to find out that I had lost access to basically everything. I couldn't log into my email or even check my calendar," Ms Tsai said in the YouTube video titled 'Day in my life getting laid off at Google'. "I called my boss back and we just sobbed over the phone because she was also finding out about my layoff for the first time today too," she added.

Watch the video below:

The former Google employee said that she spent most of her day crying and scrolling through LinkedIn to read about other employees who were also impacted by the layoffs. She said that she started receiving calls from her co-workers as well as she discovered who else was let go.

"I think the worst part is that it seems like no one was consulted on this decision, and everyone was just finding out about the layoffs at the same time. It just felt like a really bad game of Russian roulette," Ms Tsai said in the video. "There was no consistency around who was let go. It was also not performance based so it just felt really random," she added.

At the end of her video, Ms Tsai also stated that she felt "so tired from being sad" that she decided to visit Disneyland to lift her mood. She also stated that she is not sure what she will do next.

Meanwhile, according to her LinkedIn page, Ms Tsai had been working at Google since July 2021. In her post, she said that she was "completely blindsided" after finding out she was being let go, but added that "there is some comfort knowing I'm not the only one".

Google last week announced it's in the process of laying off 12,000 employees. Some of the staff realised they lost their jobs when they were unable to access the systems. Chief executive officer (CEO) Sunder Pichai has stressed the cuts were made after careful consideration. He also stated that Google will "support" employees as they look for other opportunities.

Software Giant SAP To Lay Off 3,000 Workers To Focus On "Core Business"

German software giant SAP on Thursday said it planned to cut some 3,000 jobs this year, joining a wave of layoffs in the global tech sector.

The Walldorf-based group, which offers both traditional software and cloud-based computing services, said it planned to carry out a "targeted restructuring programme" to "strengthen its core business" and improve efficiency.

"The programme is expected to affect approximately 2.5 percent of SAP's employees," it said in an earnings report unveiling full-year results for 2022.

SAP has a workforce of around 120,000 employees worldwide, meaning it plans to shed some 3,000 jobs.

The move follows similar cuts announced by tech giants Meta, Amazon, Google, IBM and Microsoft as the once-unassailable sector girds for an economic downturn.

SAP said its jobs cull would cost the company between 250 and 300 million euros, mainly in the first quarter of 2023.

The restructuring is expected to lead to annual savings of 300-350 million euros from 2024, "which will help to fuel investments into strategic growth areas", SAP said.

SAP also said it would explore a sale of its Qualtrics subsidiary, which specialises in online market research software.

A sale would further allow SAP to focus more on its core cloud business, it said.

As 'Pathaan' Releases, Fake Video Shows PM Modi Watching Its Trailer

Fans are going crazy as Shah Rukh Khan-Deepika Padukone starrer Pathaan hit the theatres on Wednesday. The film marks SRK's return to the movies after a gap of over four years, and opened to a positive response in cinema halls across the country. But amidst the frenzy, a fake video that shows Prime Minister Narendra Modi enjoying the film's trailer in his office is going viral. The doctored video shows PM Modi clapping as action-packed scenes from Pathaan play on the television.

The video has been viewed more than 46,000 times and received nearly 100 retweets.

The 25-second video also has text super that says 'PM Modi watched Pathaan trailer in his office today'. It was posted on January 18, more than a week after Pathaan's trailer was officially released.

Users were quick to point out that it is a fake video, and asked such "misleading" things to be stopped. Others were impressed by incredible editing.

The video is actually from 2019, when PM Modi watched the launch of India's moon mission Chandrayaan-2 from his office. He is seen clapping as then ISRO chairman celebrates the lifting-off of the rocket from his office along with other space scientists.

Some users have posted the link of the original post in the comment section of the tweet.

Pathaan has the highest screen count of any Hindi release - it's showing on 8,000 screens worldwide. And out of these, 2,500 are abroad. The film has opened in over 100 countries, also a record.

Pathaan, directed by Siddharth Anand, is part of producers Yash Raj Films' spy universe that also includes the Tiger films, starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, and War, starring Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff. Shah Rukh Khan, in his first lead role after 2018's Zero, plays the titular Pathaan, a RAW agent brought in from the wilderness to tackle a terror threat. Pathaan teams up with Deepika Padukone's character against terrorist leader Jim, played by John Abraham.

What's Making Ajay Devgn So Happy? Pathaan's "Fantastic" Advance Bookings

Superstar Ajay Devgn on Tuesday said he wants every film to be a super hit and is happy that Shah Rukh Khan's Pathaan is heading to record advance booking. Devgn, whose thriller-drama Drishyam 2 emerged as one of the biggest Hindi blockbusters of 2022 with the earnings of over Rs 280 crores worldwide, said the film industry needs more super hit movies to revive the culture of going to cinemas post the pandemic.

"After the film (Drishyam 2), became super hit I would say, we need more three-four super hit films. Because after the pandemic things have slowed down. We need to inculcate that habit among people to come to theatres to watch a film. So let's keep our fingers crossed.

"I want every film to be super duper hit. Now Pathaan is releasing and whatever reports we are reading about the advance booking it seems fantastic and I am very happy about it from the bottom of my heart," the actor said during the teaser launch of his upcoming film Bholaa.

A Yash Raj Films project, Pathaan is directed by Siddharth Anand and also features Deepika Padukone and John Abraham in pivotal roles. Industry experts are confident that the film will open somewhere between Rs 45 to 50 crore at the box office.

Devgn is also elated about the winning streak of SS Rajamouli's RRR (Rise Roar Revolt). The movie has won a Golden Globe for Naatu Naatu. The song was also adjudged as the winner in Critics Choice Awards, where RRR was declared the best foreign language film.

Devgn, who featured in the film in a special appearance, said he feels proud that Rajamouli has brought so much recognition for the Indian film industry. "When a film works, the whole industry benefits. In the same way Rajamouli has taken the film internationally. Today we are reading reports in papers on how James Cameron and others are talking (about the film).

"Through RRR our industry is being recognised, which is a big thing and we feel proud. So, I am keeping my fingers crossed that it gets as many nominations and awards as possible and it will be good for us," the actor said.

RRR is a pre-independence fictional story following two real-life Indian revolutionaries – Alluri Sitarama Raju (Ram Charan) and Komaram Bheem (Jr NTR) – in the 1920s. Devgn played the role of Charan's father in the film.

The Telugu movie is part of Oscars shortlist in the best original song category for Naatu Naatu. Nominations for the 95th Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday.

Devgn's latest Bholaa, which he has also directed, is the Hindi remake of Tamil hit Kaithi. It also features Tabu in a pivotal role.

Viral Video: Woman Scares Metro Passengers By Dressing Up As 'Manjulika'

Pranking people for social media likes has become the new trend among content creators. A video has now surfaced on the internet which shows a woman dressed up as 'Manjulika', from the 2007 Bollywood movie 'Bhool Bhulaiya'. The woman, dressed in a yellow saree is seen entering a Noida metro with dishevelled hair, some jewellery and messed-up makeup on her face.

She is seen roaming around the metro compartment, while enacting the possessed character 'Manjulika', trying to scare people. Not only that, she is even seen approaching people who are comfortably seated, trying to gain their attention with her yelling and gestures. However, some were simply unbothered.

One of her victims was a youth sitting in the corner seat with his headphones on, oblivious to what was happening around him. Trying to scare him, she aggressively tapped on his shoulder, forcing him to vacate his seat. The clip ends with the woman taking the man's seat while continuing to scare people in typical 'Manjulika' style.

Not just her, but another man dressed as a character inspired by Netflix show 'Money Heist' was also spotted walking in the metro. After the video went viral, many people tagged the police officials to take note of the incident. Authorities are now trying to identify her to initiate action against her.

Meanwhile, the video has received mixed reactions from the audience, with some people calling it 'harmless fun', while others criticized the woman for disturbing other passengers, especially children.

'Bhool Bhulaiyaa' was a psychological horror comedy that was released in 2007, starring Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan. Recently, another video surfaced online showing a woman dressed up as 'Manjulika' pranking people at the Laxmi Niwas Palace in Rajasthan's Bharatpur.

INS Vagir A "Lethal Platform": Navy Chief As Submarine Commissioned

INS Vagir, the fifth submarine of the Kalvari Class submarines, was commissioned into the Indian Navy on Monday, giving a boost to the force's prowess. INS Vagir, which has been built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai with technology transfer from France, was commissioned in a ceremony attended by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar.

"The submarine will boost the Indian Navy's capability to further India's maritime interests in deterring the enemy, and conducting Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) to provide decisive blow in the times of crisis," the Navy said.

'Vagir' means sand shark, which represents stealth and fearlessness, two qualities synonymous with the ethos of a submariner, it said.

Describing Vagir as a "lethal platform" with a formidable weapons package and state-of-the-art stealth technology, Admiral Kumar said its capabilities and firepower will not only enhance the Navy's combat potential but also "add teeth" to the country's deterrence.

Vagir will be the third submarine inducted into the Navy in a short span of 24 months, Admiral Kumar said.

"This is no small achievement, and underscores the coming of age of India's shipbuilding industry, and the maturing of our defence ecosystem. It is also a shining testimony to the expertise and experience of our shipyards to construct complex and complicated platforms," the Admiral added.

MDL Chairman and Managing Director Narayan Prasad said Vagir completed sea trials in 11 months from February 2022, adding its commissioning comes at a very crucial time when the geopolitical environment demands that the country respond adequately to safeguard its national interest.

Apart from adding more teeth to Indian Navy's prowess, the induction of Vagir into the Indian Navy is a shining example of making a very strong and determined foray towards the 'Make in India' initiative, Mr Prasad said.

Equipped with some of the best sensors in the world, the INS Vagir's weapons package include sufficient wire guided torpedoes and sub-surface to surface missiles to neutralise a large enemy fleet, the Navy said.

The submarine also has the capability of launching marine commandos for special operations, while its powerful diesel engines can quickly charge batteries for a stealth mission, the Navy added.

For self defence, it has a state of the art torpedo decoy system, the Navy release added.

The commissioning of INS Vagir comes amid the increasing presence of the Chinese Navy in the Indian Ocean.

Vagshir, the last of the Kalvari submarines, is at an advanced stage of construction and is being readied to commence her first surface sea sorties in March-April.
