Box Office: Hrithik-Deepika's Fighter "Shocks India, Rocks Overseas"

The weekday business of Fighter, which released last week, is something of a "paradox," in trade analyst Taran Adarsh's words. Fighter, which stars Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone as air force officers, has seen a sharp drop in domestic box office numbers – "the dwindling numbers in India are a complete shocker," per Mr Adarsh. However, the film is doing well abroad; USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand have posted strong weekday figures after an "excellent weekend" of business. "How does one explain this paradox," Taran Adarsh asked in his post on the numbers.

Fighter's domestic box office total after six days on screens is Rs 134 crore, as reported by Sacnilk. This week, daily collections fell to single digits – Rs 8 crore on Monday and Rs 7.5 crore yesterday – as compared to Sunday's total of Rs 29 crore.

"Fighter shocks India, rocks overseas. The underperformance of Fighter has sent shock waves within the industry. Imagine, the film ticks all the boxes - right from star names and director's credentials to tremendous critical acclaim and positive audience feedback. Yet, the dwindling numbers in India are a complete shocker. To face a setback at the very start of the year is indeed worrisome," posted Taran Adarsh.

He continued: "Having said that, while the numbers are witnessing a downward trend in India, the biz in key international markets continue to be strong, even on weekdays. Markets like USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are still holding fort, even after an excellent weekend. How does one explain this paradox?"

He's not the only expert taken aback by the unimpressive numbers of the year's first big film. "It's disappointing to see Fighter drop on Monday. This is a film that deserved to be a success. Surprised that audiences have not stepped in, even though Friday was particularly good," wrote trade analyst Joginder Tuteja – read his full post here:

Exclusive: Narayana Murthy Was Asked Why He Cleans His Toilets. His Reply

Infosys founder Narayana Murthy today opened up about cleaning his own toilets, which he sees as a matter of principle, in an exclusive interview with NDTV. He also spoke about how he convinced his children when they asked him why he chose to clean his own toilets. 

"I would explain to my children gently and affectionately that these are the best ways of respecting other people. In our society, people always feel that those who clean their own toilets are looked down upon. Therefore, I would tell them that look, nobody is less than us," Mr Murthy said. 

"My children are very curious. They observe and have a lot of questions. I would tell them that look, nobody is less than us. It so happened that we have been put into a very advantageous situation by God," he said. 

Elaborating further, the tech billionaire explained his conversation with children about cleaning his own toilets which in India is still seen as taboo, especially in rich families. 

"We cannot take that as our right, we cannot take it with a sense of arrogance, therefore, to the extent possible, we should try and do thing that will give us a sense that we are trying to be as fair to the society as possible," the 78-year-old billionaire told NDTV. 

He also said both his children are very understanding, adding that they all were very curious, bright, and inquisitive.

On Joining Politics

Mr Murthy categorically denied any plans of joining politics as the 78-year-old industrialist believes he's too old for that now.

"I think I'm too old for any of that. I'm now 78," Mr Murthy said when asked if he would now consider a career in politics.

Elaborating on his plans, he said that he now plans to spend time with his children and his grandchildren. He also plans to enjoy music and read up on a variety of topics ranging from physics to economics.

Author and philanthropist Sudha Murty, Mr Murthy's wife, also said that she does not need to join politics to serve the public.

"Thank You, Mann Sahab": Punjab Congress Leader To NDTV On AAP's Solo Plan

A day after Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann revealed Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) plans to go solo in Punjab in the Lok Sabha polls, one of the state's top Congress leaders has 'thanked' the Chief Minister and said this is "exactly what we wanted".

"This is what the Congress cadre in Punjab wanted from the beginning. There is a difference between Punjab and other states. Here, they (AAP) are in the government and we are the principal opposition. How can both of us get together," Partap Singh Bajwa, Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly, told NDTV in an exclusive interview.

"If we get together, the anti-incumbency vote is going to shift, either to the BJP or to the Akali Dal. How can we relinquish our position? Congress is on the comeback train. This way, we will finish our existence. We have to preserve our vote bank, and build on it. This is much better for both (Congress and AAP)," he said.

Mr Bajwa said that the seats the AAP and Congress win will remain with the anti-BJP Opposition bloc anyway. "We are fighting (AAP) in the Vidhan Sabha and outside it. Every day, the main opposition is coming from the Congress. We are on the streets of Punjab against them. How do you think we can sit on the same stage with them," he said.

The Congress leader said this is not his stand alone. "Every single Congress worker (feels the same). Our general secretary has been holding meetings with Congress workers, block president, district president, MLAs and former MLAs, MPs and former MPs, state party presidents. 99.9 per cent of people with folded hands have suggested that we would have nothing to do with AAP. "I would like to thank Mr Mann, he has made our job a little easier. This is exactly what we wanted," he said.

He denied that such statements were part of bargaining tactics. "If our votes shift to another party, they won't come back during the 2027 Assembly polls. We have already seen such experiments in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. In Delhi, we helped these AAP guys to form their government in 2014. Since then, we are nowhere to be seen. We don't want a similar situation in Punjab," he said.

Mr Mann yesterday sparked a buzz by announcing that AAP is working on finalising candidates for all 13 Punjab seats. Soon after, MP and Punjab co-incharge Sandeep Pathak played down the remarks and said the final decision was yet to be taken. "This is not new. Punjab unit had been saying from the beginning that they are capable of contesting alone. If you look at the local unit of Congress, they too say that they don't want to forge an alliance. So, local units have their own aspirations. The final decision will be taken by the coordination committee, seat-sharing committee and the High Command. Let's wait for it. The sooner it is done, the better," he said.

Mr Mann's remarks had come shortly after the INDIA bloc suffered another setback in Bengal, with Trinamool Congress supremo ruling out any alliance with the Congress in the state. In Bengal, too, state Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has been opposed to an alliance with the ruling Trinamool in Bengal. The Congress leadership, however, has said it cannot imagine INDIA bloc without Ms Banerjee.

"Injustice To Talent": Ex Pak Star's No Nonsense Remark On Shubman Gill

One of the finest performers for India in 2023, Shubman Gill hasn't done much justice to his talent in 2024. After a poor show in the first T20I against Afghanistan, Gill was dropped in favour of Yashasvi Jaiswal for the opening spot. Jaiswal grabbed his chance with both hands, scoring a half-century in the second T20I. Gill, over the last few weeks, hasn't quite managed to justify his place in the team, be it the shortest format or the longest. Former Pakistan cricketer Salman Butt isn't pleased seeing a talented player like Gill going on this sort of barren run.

"I think Shubman Gill has done an injustice to his talent in the last few games. He is too good a player and has too much skill for the kind of hurry that he has been showing. He scores 20-odd and then plays a loose shot. This is what he wasn't doing when he had a successful year. He just needs to bat and bat without doing anything special. He needs to realise that even if you are the best batter in the world, you can't play every ball on your own terms. You have to react to the ball instead of dictating it," Butt said in a video on his YouTube channel.

As for the second T20I, ndia opted to field first and troubled Afghanistan with frequent wickets. Gulbadin Naib (57 in 35 balls, with five fours and four sixes) continued to play unbothered, despite wickets falling at the other end and made an attacking fifty.

Pacer Arshdeep Singh (3/32) was the pick of the bowlers for India, while Ravi Bishnoi (2/39) and Axar (2/17) also bowled well to restrict Afghanistan's run flow. Shivam Dube also took 1/36 in his three overs.

In the chase of 173, skipper Rohit Sharma was once again out for a duck. But a returning Virat Kohli (29 in 16 balls, with five fours) played with a refreshing attacking intent and formed a 57-run stand with Yashasvi Jaiswal. Following Virat's dismissal, Yashasvi (68 in 34 balls, with five fours and six sixes) and Shivam Dube (63* in 32 balls with five fours and four sixes) demolished the Afghanistan bowling line-up with their hitting, putting up a 92-run partnership in just 42 balls. Rinku Singh (9*) and Shivam finished off things to give India a six-wicket win and a series win by 2-0, with one game left.

Karim Janat (2/13) was the pick of the bowlers for Afghanistan. Axar Patel was the 'Player of the Match' for his bowling spell.

Marking his return to T20 internationals after a 14-month hiatus, Virat Kohli produced a fine cameo of 29 runs off 16 balls, showcasing a new approach to the shortest format of the game. During the course of his stay on the crease, Kohli hit 5 fours. Up against Afghanistan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq, the player with whom he had an infamous spat during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season, Kohli almost reacted that T20 World Cup 2022 shot he had hit against Pakistan's Haris Rauf. While the Rauf delivery had gone for a six, the shot Kohli hit against Naveen fell just short and could only fetch him 4 runs.

Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shivam Dube smashed half-centuries as India thrashed Afghanistan by six wickets in the second Twenty20 international in Indore.

Jaiswal, who hit 68 off 34 balls, returned to the team along with star batsman Virat Kohli after the two missed the opening win.

Jaiswal put on key partnerships including a 92-run stand with left-handed partner Dube, who hit an unbeaten 63, as India chased down their victory target with 26 balls to spare and take an unbeatable 2-0 lead.

Top-ranked India have been unbeaten at home for 15 consecutive T20 series.

Their bowlers set up victory with left-arm spinner Axar Patel leading the charge with figures of 2-17 to help dismiss Afghanistan for 172 despite Gulbadin Naib's 57.

Kohli, who played his first T20 for India since November 2022, made 29 in a partnership of 57 with Jaiswal after Rohit fell for a second successive duck.

Jaiswal took apart the opposition bowling after left-arm quick Fazalhaq Farooqi bowled Rohit and fellow fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq took down Kohli.

Jaiswal reached his fourth T20 half-ton for India and Dube, who starred in the team's opening win, joined the charge to hit his second successive fifty.

Jaiswal hit five fours and six sixes before he fell to Karim Janat who struck twice in an over but Dube stood firm to steer the team home and gi past his previous T20 best of 60 not out.

Speaking about Agastya Nanda, he said, “I love the fact that he is very open to becoming friends. He is very easy to be friendly with. We broke the ice on day 1. Our friendship was like a really important part of my journey in the film. And tolerate about him is that he is very bad at texting. So, he does not reply to me very quickly. It may take a day or two for him to get back to me.” Vedang added that Agastya is “a very affectionate person. He will jump on you, touch you, hug you.”

When asked about Khushi Kapoor – who he is also rumoured to be dating – Vedang Raina shared, “I love the fact that she is always looking around for others and she is very generous. She puts others before herself. Tolerate about her that… I said this before as well, but it is not like really tolerating or something, but it is a fact that I would like to change about her. Something I'd like to change about her is that she goes on a self-doubt trip sometimes. She'd question herself and her abilities. And I would like her to have more confidence in herself.”

No Proposal To Cut Price Of Petrol, Diesel: Oil Minister Hardeep Puri

Mahua Moitra Gets No Supreme Court Relief, Asked To Reply To Notice

The Supreme Court today declined to look into the expulsion of Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra from the Lok Sabha, in a setback to the leader who faces cash-for-query allegations linked to businessman Darshan Hiranandani.

Though the Supreme Court did not dismiss Ms Moitra's challenge against her expulsion from parliament, the court said it will first determine whether it has jurisdiction to hear the matter.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Lok Sabha secretariat, said the Supreme Court should not interfere in decisions taken inside parliament.

"If we have the power of judicial review, we will investigate," the Supreme Court said, and issued notice to the Lok Sabha Secretariat.

The Lok Sabha Secretariat has been given three weeks to respond, after which Ms Moitra will also get three weeks to reply. The hearing will begin from March 11 in the Supreme Court again.

At the moment, Ms Moitra remains expelled from the Lok Sabha and can't participate in the proceedings.

The Supreme Court said for now it won't comment on the merits of the issues raised by Ms Moitra in the challenge to her expulsion, but has kept the case open.

"Do you admit that you shared OTP with Hiranandani?" the Supreme Court said in the hearing today.

"All MPs do this with their secretaries," senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Ms Moitra, told the court.

The Supreme Court declined Ms Moitra's request for an early hearing citing the Budget session, due next month.

Ms Moitra, 49, was accused of taking bribes, including Rs 2 crore in cash and "luxury gift items", from Mr Hiranandani in exchange for asking questions critical of the government in parliament. She was also accused of surrendering log-in credentials to a confidential account on the parliamentary website, so Mr Hiranandani could post those questions directly.

Ms Moitra denied the bribery charges but admitted to sharing the login details. She argued that sharing of these details is common practice among MPs.

Supreme Court Stays Order On Transfer Of Himachal DGP

The Supreme Court today stayed the order of the Himachal Pradesh High Court asking the state government to shift senior IPS officer Sanjay Kundu from the post of Director General of Police (DGP). The decision to shift him was taken to stop him from influencing the probe into the alleged harassment of Palampur businessman Nishant Sharma.

The Supreme Court bench, headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, granted liberty to Kundu to move the high court to seek recall of its December 26 order.

The bench said till the recall application is disposed of by the high court, the direction for transfer of Kundu from the post of DGP of the state shall remain stayed.

The Supreme Court requested the high court to dispose of the recall application within two weeks.

Sanjay Kundu was on Tuesday removed from the post of Himachal DGP and posted as Principal Secretary, Ayush department.

The Himachal Pradesh High Court had on December 26 ordered the State government to shift the DGP and Kangra Superintendent of Police Shalini Agnihotri to other posts before January 4, 2024 to ensure that "they didn't have an opportunity to influence the investigation".

The businessman had sought the High Court's intervention on the grounds that he needed protection from powerful people as he was living in constant fear of being killed.

Kundu's lawyer had told the Supreme Court that the matter was "extraordinary" as the high court did not hear the officer before directing the state government to shift him.

"Not An Ideal Situation": Dean Elgar On 'Test Cricket Is Dying' Discussion

With nothing to lose on the eve of his final international outing, Dean Elgar didn't hold back while expressing his disgust about Cricket South Africa sending a third-string squad to New Zealand under an uncapped captain just because the series is coinciding with the cash-rich SA20. It is a situation the 36-year-old Elgar, the stand-in captain for the second, and final, Test against India at Newlands, termed as "not ideal." "I still think Test cricket will have a future and in speaking to the younger guys in the dressing room, they still live for the format," Elgar said on Tuesday during his last pre-match conference. "The situation we've been put in from a cricketing fraternity perspective isn't ideal and maybe the team that's selected to go to New Zealand isn't ideal for the conversation of how I see Test cricket," Elgar was straightforward in his observations.

Neil Brand will lead the Proteas team with seven uncapped players and none with even 10 Test experience against a strong New Zealand side as Cricket South Africa (CSA) prioritised the SA20, whose franchises are run by IPL team investors.

The move has been made with an aim to maintain the financial health of CSA.

While it is an opportunity for new players, Elgar said that the administrators will have to decide the course for the traditional format in this day and age.

"It must be seen in that light as we can't control what happens behind the scenes. It is out of the players, coaches and team management's hands," he hit the nail on its head.

"We need to focus on what we can focus on and the guys going to New Zealand need to focus on that," the retiring skipper with over 5000 Test runs said.

However, Elgar said that his decision to retire after the India series was a long and well-thought out one.

"I made my decision long ago. It was a couple of months back that I decided for this to be my last series," Elgar said.

"Regardless of what happened behind the scenes, I had already made my bed and I'm sleeping in it quite nicely. The future is in the hands of the administrators in terms of making the right decisions for players and the longevity of our Test format and our Test team," he put the ball in CSA's court.

For Elgar, as long as he is around the system, he will remain a Test cricket fanatic.

"A lot of people have a lot to say about our Test cricket from a negative perspective. Us as players, we need to go out there and win, show hunger for this format. As long as I am around, I will remain a Test fanatic," Elgar didn't mince words in stating where his priorities lay.

"A lot of our guys are Test fanatics, but we need opportunities to come our way, otherwise, the conversations are going to be continuous. It's up to the powers that be to make the right calls and I want to see the guys experience what I experienced in the past 12 years."

Fixtures are important

The SA20 clashing with the Test tour of New Zealand indicates that the custodians of the game don't care about the fixtures.

"The fixtures are vitally important from a cricketing and individual growth point of view," Elgar said.

"Guys need to be exposed more against powerhouse Test nations because you want to compete with the best from an individual and collective point of view." If the youngsters aren't exposed to Tests, they won't learn about the challenges, he said.

"You want to have results in your favour, but also want to follow a process that Test cricket demands and when you're not getting exposure, you lose a bit.

"The more matches you play, the better the performances you put out and with more exposure, the more money will be paid for match fees.

"Again, it'll boil down to administrators making the right decisions because it'll be sad for us playing just two Test in a series regularly.

"It's not a fitting way to learn about the format."
