In Israel, Sperm Of Soldiers Killed In Gaza War Being Frozen

As Israel's war in Gaza rages, a growing number of parents in Israel are demanding sperm from the bodies of their sons, who were killed during the ongoing conflict, to be extracted and frozen, a BBC report said.

Since Hamas' all-out offense on October 7 and Israel's brutal retaliation, over 400 Israelis have been killed.

Of these, sperm has been retrieved from as many as 170 men - both civilians and soldiers - according to the Israeli health ministry. This marks a 15 times rise as compared to previous years.

The process involves making an small incision in the testicle to take a piece of tissue from which live sperm cells can be extracted and frozen. The chances of successful retrieval are high within 24 hours after death but the sperm cell can live for up to 72 hours in the body of the deceased.

To ease the process of grieving families, some rules for the procedure have been relaxed but families are still frustrated about the lengthy legal processes they face.

In October, the Israeli health ministry removed a mandatory court order request for parents to use the procedure to extract sperm. While it has become easier to freeze the sperm, widows or parents who want to use it in the conception of a child have to prove in court that the dead man wanted to have children.

Parents say the whole process can take years, the long wait adding to their grief.

The first Israeli couple to preserve and use their dead son's sperm did so in 2002 after their son, a soldier, was shot dead by a Palestinian sniper in the Gaza Strip. Their granddaughter is now 10 years old.

While experts believe the process has “great meaning” to bereaved families, they also say that "the current rules have created a conflict in the case of single men" as their desire to have a child has to be proven to court for the procedure to be carried out.

As single men often have no clear record of consent, their families, who arealready coping with grief in “a very difficult situation”, can only freeze the sperm but can't use it for fertilisation.

Currently, Israeli lawmakers are attempting to draft a bill to create clearer, more comprehensive rules for the process seeing the high number of deaths in the ongoing war in Gaza.

Speeding Driver Kills Ecuadorian Politician's Daughter In Front Of Fiance

A court has heard that Vanessa Sagnay de la Bastida, the daughter of an Ecuadorian politician, was cruelly killed in front of her fiance, Michael Williams, by a speeding Mercedes. The 28-year-old was crossing a road close to Wandsworth Bridge in west London when the event happened, according to The Metro.

This incident happened while Vanessa was crossing the road near Wandsworth Bridge in west London.

The news reports mentioned that the driver of the speeding Mercedes, 39-year-old Octavian Cadar, was speeding at more than twice the legal limit at the time of the collision.

The impact caused Ms. Sagnay, also known as Charlotte, to somersault through the air before landing on a railing. Despite efforts by an off-duty doctor, she died 13 minutes later at the scene from a severe head injury, according to The Metro.

Cadar, of Bexley, south-east London, has already admitted causing death by careless driving but denied the more serious charge of causing death by dangerous driving. According to The Metro, Cadar had just finished at a nearby McDonald's drive-through and was on his way to see his girlfriend in Fulham when the crash took place. The accident happened at around 10:06 pm on March 16, 2022.

Prosecutor Amanda Hilton said: "As they came to traffic lights, Mr Williams pressed the button and looked to the right and the road was clear. They started crossing towards the central reservation."

"As they were crossing, Octavian Cadar drove his Mercedes after the roundabout at speed. They heard the car coming. Mr Williams ran on the journey they were taking. Charlotte ran back to the pavement they had just left and the Mercedes struck her."

"Mr Williams, who witnessed the collision, told police Charlotte was hit on the lefthand side by the bonnet of the car and he watched as Charlotte was thrown forward on to a railing. He heard her scream and then he saw her land on the ground."

"Dhire Dhire...": Nitish Kumar On Denial Of Special Status To Bihar

The Centre's decision to rule out special status for Bihar, a long-standing demand of one of the BJP's key allies, the Janata Dal United (JDU), has prompted a cryptic response from the party's president and state Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Ahead of the presentation of the Union Budget on Tuesday, Mr Kumar was asked about the Union Government's decision, which was communicated in a written reply in Parliament the previous day.

Speaking to reporters outside the Bihar Assembly, the chief minister, who has had an on-again, off-again relationship with the BJP and the NDA, said, "Sab kuch dhire dhire jaan jaiyega (You will get to know everything in due course)" before waving and walking in.

The BJP, which has failed to get a majority in the Lok Sabha on its own, was dependent on its allies to reach the magic number of 272 and form the government for the third time under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The BJP's tally was 240 and this meant that Mr Kumar's JDU, with its 12 MPs and Chandrababu Naidu's TDP, with 16, played a crucial role in government formation.

Mr Kumar had left the NDA and joined hands with the Mahagathbandhan in Bihar, which has the RJD and the Congress as key constituents, in August 2022. He was also one of the key architects of the opposition INDIA alliance, which managed to clinch 232 seats in the Lok Sabha elections, before switching sides yet again and siding with the NDA in January.

After the Lok Sabha elections, the JDU had held a national executive meeting and passed a resolution reiterating its demand for special status.

On Monday, after the Union government's reply came to light, leaders of the JDU, which has two ministers in the Union government, went into firefighting mode, saying that the resolution also spoke of a "special package and other types of help" and that Bihar could still get a lot of aid from the Centre.

The opposition in Bihar, led by Lalu Yadav's RJD, had, however, used the opportunity to hit out at Mr Kumar and even demand his resignation.

"Nitish Kumar appears to have compromised Bihar's aspirations and the trust of its people for the sake of power. He had promised to secure special status for Bihar, but now that the Centre has denied it, he should resign," Mr Yadav had said.

In a post on X, the RJD handle wrote, "Nitish Kumar and JDU leaders must enjoy the fruits of power at the Centre and continue their drama politics on special status."

Decades-Long Push

Nitish Kumar, who is Bihar's longest-serving chief minister, has been pushing for special status since 2000, when many of the state's mineral-rich regions were carved out into the state of Jharkhand.

Special status ensures more central support to a backward state to help boost its growth and bring it on a par with others. There was no provision for special status in the constitution but it was introduced in 1969 on the recommendations of the Fifth Finance Commission.

As of 2024, eleven states have special status. These are Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Telangana.

Ramprit Mandal, who is a JDU MP from Bihar's Jhanjharpur, had asked the Finance Ministry if the government plans to provide special status to Bihar and other most backward states to promote economic growth and industrialisation.

In a written response, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary had said on Monday that a "case for Special Category Status for Bihar is not made out".

"The Special Category Status for plan assistance was granted in the past by the National Development Council (NDC) to some States that were characterized by a number of features necessitating special consideration. These features included (i) hilly and difficult terrain, (ii) low population density and/or sizeable share of tribal population, (iii) strategic location along borders with neighbouring countries, (iv) economic and infrastructural backwardness and (v) non-viable nature of State finances," the minister said.

"Earlier, the request of Bihar for Special Category Status was considered by an Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG) which submitted its Report on 30th March, 2012. The IMG came to the finding that based on existing NDC criteria, the case for Special Category Status for Bihar is not made out," he added.

Opinion: Why West's Frustration Over Modi's Russia Visit Is Hypocrisy 101

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Russia shortly after assuming office has drawn criticism in the West, particularly within foreign policy and media circles. Some voices in India also argue that Russia is now a declining power increasingly aligned with and reliant on China. They, therefore, suggest that India should opt decisively for a stronger partnership with the West.

There is no reason for these critics in the West to throw tantrums over Modi's visit. This visit follows logically from the position India has taken on preserving its long-standing ties with Russia, notwithstanding Western pressures to dilute them in the wake of the latter's military intervention in Ukraine. The resumption of summit-level contacts with Russia, interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia's pre-occupation in the Ukraine conflict, was important, and a delay would have been interpreted as a cooling-off of ties.

The G7 Summit

Modi, despite his preoccupations at home following the general elections that produced unexpected results for him and his party, decided to attend the G7 summit as a priority as it provided an occasion to interact with key Western partners and confidently signal a continuity in foreign policy in his third term. He followed this up with a visit to Russia, again on a priority basis, as it was important to resume the tradition of summit-level dialogue between the two countries, especially as the international landscape has become more alarming with the emergence of a new Cold War-like divisive atmosphere, which is also impacting India-Russia bilateral exchanges and the Global South in general.

That the West has felt frustrated by India's "neutrality" on the Ukraine conflict is a reality. This frustration has bubbled over with Modi's visit to Russia to the point of diplomatic, intellectual and geopolitical pettiness. Modi's embrace of Putin has elicited much disparagement, even though it is well-known that this is Modi's signature greeting style.

Also Read | Russia Visit: An Emphatic Foreign Policy Statement From Modi 3.0

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's outburst has been particularly intemperate. He has chided Modi as the leader of the world's largest democracy for hugging a bloody criminal in Moscow and has ludicrously claimed that this had inflicted a devastating blow to peace efforts in Ukraine. This is ironic in view of the position he and his Western supporters have taken against any dialogue with Putin, of demonising him, and believing that peace will come only with an upper hand on the battlefield.

Zelenskyy's Own Position

Zelenskyy forgot that Modi had embraced him too at the G7 summit, even though the two have not had a history of close personal contacts that Modi has had with Putin. More pertinently, by postponing elections, banning the opposition and imposing censorship, Zelenskyy's democratic credentials and that of Ukraine have been widely called into question. Russia, too, describes his regime as a criminal one, but that did not deter Modi from embracing Zelenskyy.

Some media commentators in India have also questioned the diplomatic wisdom of embracing Putin, especially in light of the bombing of a children's hospital in Kyiv during his visit to Moscow (though the facts surrounding this incident are disputed). They seem to forget that had Modi not done so, it would have sparked widespread speculation about the significance of such a snub, potentially risking the atmosphere of the visit and the warmth of personal relations with Putin. The purpose of the visit was to underscore India's commitment to its ties with Russia, which would have been undermined.

Furthermore, critics should be aware of the fact that Ukraine, too, has caused civilian casualties in Russia, such as the bombing of beach-goers in Crimea with NATO-supplied long-range weapons. Russia has raised these issues of Ukraine targeting civilians in the UN Security Council.

Modi Bats For Peace

Modi chose a different way to address the issue of the Kyiv bombing occurring while he was in Moscow. With his remark to Putin at Samarkand during the SCO summit that "today was not an era of war" in mind, which played diplomatically to our advantage as it was seen in the West as a rebuke to Putin, Modi in his public remarks in Moscow, with Putin at his side, said that he had had a detailed discussion with him on the issue of deaths of innocent children in war, conflict, or terrorist attacks and that these were "very painful" and "heart-wrenching". Solutions, he said, "are not possible on battlegrounds" and that peace had to be found "only through talks". Modi was artful in making a generalised statement that could be interpreted more narrowly or widely as one chooses, either as referring to the Kyiv attack, or, earlier, Ukrainian attacks, whether in Crimea or elsewhere inside Russian border areas.

The West has been fully aware of India's position on the conflict in Ukraine. India has refused to take sides, has abstained on UN resolutions, and has resisted US pressure to dilute ties with Russia. By this time, Western circles should have internalised this reality in its dealings with India and accepted it as a point of disagreement. India is preserving its ties with Russia not to spite the West but to safeguard its broader national interests.

That Modi's visit coincided with the NATO summit in Washington DC was used as a point of criticism shows how much this feeling of not getting its way is exasperating for Western circles. India does not have to adjust the calendar of Modi's visits abroad to that of NATO's meetings. India has very good ties with individual NATO members; Modi had already met the core of NATO members at the G7 meeting in Italy. NATO is already deeply involved in Ukraine; the meeting in Washington D.C. is a continuation of that involvement, but the agenda of the summit was not Ukraine alone, as it included the Western Pacific too, as signified by the presence of Japan and South Korea.

NATO's Behaviour

Any independent foreign policy or any notion of strategic autonomy cannot be reduced to this level of changing the dates of the Prime Minister's external visits to cater to the perceived sensitivities of others. There is no instance of NATO countries showing that degree of concern for India's sensitivities.

The US has officially commented on Modi's visit. In a sense, it was inevitable because of the nature of US press briefings, at which it pronounces on virtually everything happening in the world. This is part of its imperial oversight over global affairs. It has reiterated its position that ties with Russia are part of the frank dialogue it has with India, and that it spoke to the Indian side while Modi was undertaking his Moscow visit, and that it expected India to support efforts to realise a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. Furthermore, given its longstanding relationship with Russia, India could urge Putin to end his "brutal and unprovoked war". All this is not new and India could take it in its stride, even if this approach of interfering in our ties with Russia does not help in strategic trust-building.

Apart from the State Department and the White House spokespersons, the US National Security Adviser has also pronounced on India-Russia relations following Modi's visit in questionable terms. He advised India not to "bet" on Russia in the longer term as a reliable partner and asserted that Russia would always choose China over India "any time of the week" in any India-China conflict. He has subsequently spoken to Ajit Doval, India's NSA, with the Indian side projecting a forward-looking tone of the conversation. The US ambassador in India has also cautioned India about pursuing "strategic autonomy".

One can take all this as part of political differences that even allies have and remain unflustered, keep the overall picture in mind and not be distracted too much by perceptions of a discord in how national interest is interpreted by each country. Nevertheless, the US needs to better understand India's understanding of its national interest.

Russia And China

The focal point of Modi's visit to Russia was essentially to resume the summit-level dialogue, take stock of the ties, how to give more impetus to them, overcome the hurdles created by the draconian sanctions on Russia, particularly on the financial front, and ways to consolidate the recent gains in bilateral trade and simultaneously address the highly skewed and unsustainable trade balance against India.

The geopolitical situation has become more complex, with Russia and China pitted against the West in a revival of Cold War-type tensions, the West seeking to preserve its dominant position in the international order created by them after 1945, and Russia and China, to different degrees and with different motives, seeking a more multipolar world, and countries like India straddling this divide and increasing their room for manoeuvre. Assessing how Putin views Russia's ties with China, how he places India in this triangular equation would have been important for Modi.

Also Read | "Historic, Game-Changing": Russia On Outcomes Of PM Modi, Putin Talks

Russia has a vision of BRICS as a counter to the West's hegemony and views its expansion as boosting multipolarity. It is chairing the BRICS summit this year. For India, a consensus on the criteria for expansion would be important and the defining basis should not be geopolitical rivalry. Exploring Putin's thinking on this subject would have been important for Modi.

Putin's perspectives on the end game in the Ukraine conflict would have been of particular interest. The outlook for peace seems bleak with NATO increasingly committing itself to the proxy war and Russia determined to defend itself against what it sees as an existential threat from the West. India and Russia found a common language on the very sensitive issue of Ukraine, as neither side would have wanted any nuance in it that could give rise to unwanted commentary, and they succeeded in this.

Russia-India Ties: A Sea Change

Modi received great personal attention from Putin, which reflects a change in equations between the two countries. He was received at the airport by the First Deputy Prime Minister, a distinct change from the time when I was Foreign Secretary and later ambassador to Russia. Putin spent four-and-a-half hours with him over dinner at his private residence, the one-on-one official meeting lasted two and a half hours, and Putin accompanied him to a technology exhibition for an hour and they drove back together afterwards. They had ample time to have a detailed discussion on issues of shared interest. Modi was also given Russia's highest civilian state award, The Order of Saint Andrews the Apostle.

The joint statement is no doubt thin on concrete outcomes, but that was not the central purpose of the visit. It is a document that lists what needs to be done to bolster ties. The document recognises the necessity to actively explore new avenues for cooperation to forge a contemporary, balanced, mutually beneficial, sustainable and long-term partnership while further strengthening cooperation in the traditional areas.

Were Snakes Guarding Puri Temple's 'Secret Chamber'? What Judge Said

The Ratna Bhandar, also known as the revered treasury, at Lord Jagannath temple in Puri, Odisha, was reopened on Sunday. The state government formed a team of 11 members to carry out the inventory of valuables in the Bhitar Bhandar (Inner Treasury) and Bahar Treasury (Outer Treasury).  Odisha High Court judge Biswanath Rath.

Judge Rath, after paying a visit to the inner chamber treasury, told the media that the team was able to enter the premises after “cutting the locks in the presence of the magistrate and others.” FYI: the doors were opened after 46 years.

Judge Rath also addressed the reports surrounding the presence of snakes inside the chamber, reported news agency IANS. He simply refuted the reports and several myths surrounding the Ratna Bhandar.

“As seven to eight members of temple management are part of the team, they are busy as the Bahuda Yatra preparations have started, so we couldn't get more time for further checking and shifting of the ornaments. So we decided to fix another date for the shifting of the ornaments and precious stones of the deities,” Judge Rath was quoted as saying.

Arabninda Padhee, the chief administrator of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), said that the jewellery stored in the outer treasury has been shifted to a “ temporary strong room inside the temple premises and later it was sealed in the presence of a magistrate.”

He added, "We entered the outer chamber of the Ratna Bhandar after opening the locks with the keys kept with Gajapati Maharaj, the king of Puri, SJTA and the Bhandar Mekap servitor.”

To mark the occasion, the Chief Minister's Office also issued a statement on X (Formerly Twitter).

It read, "On the wish of Lord Jagannath, the Odia community, with the identity of 'Odia Asmita', has started making efforts to move forward. On your wish, the four gates of the Jagannath temples were earlier opened. Today, on your wish, the Ratna Bhandar was opened after 46 years for a greater purpose.”

Satellite Images Indicate Huge Architectural Wealth Under Bodh Gaya Temple

A geospatial analysis utilising satellite images and ground surveys has found evidence of the presence of "huge architectural wealth" buried in the Mahabodhi temple complex and its surroundings in Bihar's Bodh Gaya, officials said today.

The study has been carried out by the Bihar Heritage Development Society (BHDS), a wing of the Art, Culture and Youth Department, in collaboration with the Cardiff University of the United Kingdom.

The Mahabodhi temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the four holy areas related to the life of Lord Gautam Buddha.

Bodh Gaya is a place where Lord Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment.

"The study has unearthed evidence of the presence of archaeological treasure beneath the soil of the UNESCO World Heritage site and its surrounding areas. It's a huge architectural wealth that needs further excavation," the Art, Culture and Youth Department's Additional Chief Secretary Harjot Kaur Bamhrah told Press Trust of India.

The UK-based varsity and the BHDS are cooperating in the project, 'Archaeology on the footsteps of the Chinese traveller Xuanzang'.

Bengaluru-based National Institute of Advanced Studies faculty member MB Rajni, one of the project members, studied satellite images of the Mahabodhi temple and its surroundings and tried to correlate the findings with the description of 'Xuanzang', she said.

The present Mahabodhi temple complex at Bodh Gaya comprises the 50-metre-high grand temple, the Vajrasana, the sacred Bodhi tree and other six sacred sites of Buddha's enlightenment, surrounded by numerous ancient stupas, well maintained and protected by inner, middle and outer circular boundaries.

"The BHDS in association with Cardiff University has been working on the multidisciplinary project on the archaeological trail of the travel of 7th-century Chinese translator monk, Xuanzang, in Bihar. The satellite images from the last several years show an alignment of structures to the north of the temple, buried underground," said Bamhrah.

Significantly, the images show the shift of the river Niranjana from east to west.

"Let us remember that the Mahabodhi temple is west of the river, and the Sujata Stupa and several other archaeological remains are located east of the river. The monuments and other archaeological remains in the east of the river are now regarded to be independent of the Mahabodhi temple.

"But the latest finding shows that both the temple and the Sujata stupa along with other archaeological remains stood on the same river bank in the past," she said.

Bamhrah said this is really "very significant".

"Thus, there is a strong possibility that the monuments and other archaeological remains, now east of the river, were a part of the Mahabodhi complex," the official said.

The BHDS plans to start "research to delimit the boundaries of the Mahabodhi complex in the light of these findings", she said.

"Fresh ground-penetrating radar (GPR) survey, followed by excavations, will be undertaken to unravel the buried archaeological features shown by satellite images," she said.

Elaborating on the findings, BHDS Executive Director Bijoy Kumar Choudhary told PTI, "Our fresh study has revealed several findings that include to the north of the temple premises, a square monastery complex enclosed by a wall with a surrounding moat and an extended settlement to its north".

Hiuen Tsang, also known as Xuanzang, was a Chinese Buddhist, monk scholar, traveller and translator.

He travelled from China to India to obtain Buddhist scriptures during the reign of King Harsha Vardhan. He is best known for his journey to India from 629 to 645 CE and his efforts to bring over 657 Indian texts into China. His writings had a significant impact on the development of Buddhism in China.

Xuanzang's travelogue of India helped Alexander Cunningham in 1860s and 1870s to identify famous sites such as Nalanda and Vaishali.

"The square wall of the monastery complex is of special interest as it had been excavated by Cunningham in the 19th century, but no further excavations have been conducted. However, this area has great potential for systematic excavation.

"Upon analysing satellite imagery, we identified two concentric squares…an outer square enclosing 4.9 acres and an inner one enclosing 2.5 acres. Between the outer and inner squares, there is a gap of about 15 metres and in the south and 20 meters in the east and the west. The southern boundary of the outer square is approximately 300 feet from the wall of the Mahabodhi temple complex," says the report of Rajni.

"Although traces of the monastery are no longer visible on the ground, satellite imagery revealed that the squares overlap significantly with Samanvay Ashram," Rajni told news agency PTI.

In particular, the well that Cunningham observed at the Centre of the monastery's pillared court might be one of the two wells located within the Ashram to the south of the statue of Dwarkoji Sunderani, she said.

"The Ashram's southern boundary, marked by a compound wall on a raised ridge, aligns with the southern boundary of the outer square, thus suggesting the buried remnants of an earlier wall," Rajni added.
