New Book Reveals What Queen Elizabeth Thought About Donald Trump

Late Queen Elizabeth II thought former US President Donald Trump was "very rude", a new biography revealed. According to Craig Brown's book, A Voyage Around The Queen, not only did she find Trump's behaviour problematic but also allegedly disliked his conduct.

Moreover, the late Queen also questioned the nature of Donald Trump's relationship with his wife, Melania, suggesting she must have had some sort of "arrangement" with him to stay married. The Queen reportedly couldn't fathom why Melania would remain married to Trump, given his behavioural patterns during their meetings.

The Late Queen's comments, mentioned in the newly released book, have drawn attention, particularly in the lead-up to the 2024 US Presidential Elections.

An excerpt from the book read, "A few weeks after President Trump's visit, for instance, she confided in one lunch guest that she found him 'very rude': she particularly disliked the way he couldn't stop looking over her shoulder, as though in search of others more interesting."

Donald Trump first met the Queen in 2018 when he was President. The meeting, however, was overshadowed by controversy, as his state visit to the UK was met with widespread protests. Fast-forward to the present, Trump is making another bid for the White House. And the book appears to have dealt a blow to his campaign.

Trump has swiftly denied these allegations, labelling the book's author, Craig Brown, a "sleaze bag" and dismissing the claims as "totally false."

In an interview with the Daily Mail, he denied claims, saying, "I had a great relationship with the Queen. She liked me and I liked her."

He added, "We spent hours together at a state dinner. She was a fantastic woman. I think it's a shame that a sleaze bag can write an article that's totally false. In fact, I've always heard the opposite."

He went on to claim that he was the Queen's favourite president, saying, "I heard I was her favourite president, and you've heard that too. She would say it to a lot of people."

Actor Mindy Kaling Endorses Kamala Harris, Shares Heartfelt Story

On the third night of the Democratic National Convention, actress and producer Mindy Kaling captivated the audience with her heartfelt support for Kamala Harris' presidential campaign.

Kaling began with a lighthearted remark, saying, "The real reason I'm here is that deep down, I truly believe that as a woman of colour and a single mother of three, it is incredibly important that I be appointed ambassador to Italy."

Moving on, the actress, known for her roles in The Office and The Mindy Project, shared a personal story, shedding light on her connection to Harris and their shared Indian heritage.

She introduced herself as "the woman who courageously outed Kamala Harris as Indian in an Instagram cooking video". This light-hearted remark referred to an event several years ago when Harris, then a California senator, visited Kaling's home to film a cooking segment.

"She wasn't Madam Vice President then; she was my senator, and we were filming a video where she came to my home to cook dosas, a South Indian dish," Kaling recounted.

Reflecting on their meeting, Kaling described the immediate bond they formed, despite her initial nervousness about hosting a senator. "It's not every day that a senator comes over, and I was pretty nervous, but when she arrived, we immediately hit it off," she shared.

She recalled how they connected over their shared love for their mothers, both of whom died from cancer. "Both of our mothers were immigrants from India who came to America and committed their lives to serving others," Kaling said. Mindy Kaling's mother was an OB-GYN, while Harris' mother was a scientist dedicated to finding a cure for cancer.

One of the memorable moments for Kaling was discovering Harris' culinary skills. "But the thing I remember the most about the Vice President is that Kamala Harris can cook," Kaling said. She fondly recalled Harris' thoughtfulness, particularly towards Kaling's daughter, Kit. "She was so much better than me, but she also knew my family was watching. So as she gently corrected my sloppy dosa, she was complimenting me every step of the way, making sure that my daughter heard how good of a cook I am."

Kaling used this anecdote to highlight Harris' character. "She had no desire to be seen as better than anyone else. She just wanted my kid to be impressed with her mom," the actress said.  "It is that warmth, that generosity of spirit that I know she will bring to the White House as our next president," she endorsed.

"Thought She Might Die": Vinesh's Coach On Night Before Failed Weigh-In

Former Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat silenced millions of her critics by defeating the world No. 1 and reigning Olympic champion Yui Susaki at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Vinesh also scripted history by becoming India's first woman wrestler to enter the finals of the Olympic Games. However, in a heartbreaking twist of tale, Vinesh was disqualified on the morning of her gold medal match for being 100 grams overweight. This not only put her out of the gold medal match, but also denied her the opportunity to win silver.

Vinesh also filed an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), where she had requested to be awarded joint-silver in the Women's50kg event.

However, earlier this week, her plea was dismissed by the CAS, while the details of their verdict is expected to come out later this month.

In a now-deleted Facebook post, Woller Akos, Vinesh's coach at Paris Olympics, said he feared that the wrestler "might die" by the end of the five-and-a-half hours of intense weight-cut.

"After the semi-final, 2.7 kg of excess weight was left; we exercised for one hour and twenty minutes, but 1.5 kg still remained. Later, after 50 minutes of sauna, not a drop of sweat appeared on her. There was no choice left, and from midnight to 5:30 in the morning, she worked on different cardio machines and wrestling moves, about three-quarters of an hour at one go, with two-three minutes of rest. Then she started again. She collapsed, but somehow we got her up, and she spent an hour in the sauna. I don't intentionally write dramatic details, but I only remember thinking that she might die," Akos wrote in a post which he later deleted.

For the unversed, Vinesh was hospitalised on the morning of her final bout due to dehydration. Woller also shed light on what Vinesh told him while they were returning from the hospital.

"We had an interesting conversation that night, returning from the hospital. Vinesh Phogat said, 'Coach, don't be sad because you told me that if I find myself in any difficult situation and need extra energy, I should think that I beat the best woman wrestler (Japan's Yui Susaki) in the world. I achieved my goal, I proved that I am one of the best in the world. We have proved that the gameplans work. Medals, podiums are just objects. Performance cannot be taken away'," he added.

"Vinesh had pleaded with Sakshi and Bajrang to not put their hard-earned Olympic medals in the river. She begged them to keep those because they were special. But they explained to her that the journey was important and their performance was not defined by medals. We will still be proud of the fact that our professional programme could lead to beating the best woman wrestler in the world and take an Indian woman wrestler to the Olympic final for the first time in history," Akos signed off.

What Vinesh Phogat Told Court On Reason Behind Increased Weight At Olympics

Entire India awaits the Court of Arbitration (CAS) verdict on wrestler Vinesh Phogat's joint silver medal plea. Vinesh, who was disqualified before her final in the Women's Freestyle 50k wrestling bout, was weighing 100 grams over the 50kg limit. As the arguments continue in front of the CAS, Vinesh has reportedly sighted the tight schedule between her bout as well as the distance between Athletes' Village and the competition arena as the reason behind her failure to make the weight cut.

Delhi's Bodybuilder Cop Waves Pistol While Dancing At Party, Video Viral

Deepak Sharma, an assistant superintendent at Delhi's Tihar Jail, has found himself at the centre of a controversy after a video of him waving a pistol at a private birthday party went viral. The incident reportedly took place in the Ghonda area of the national capital.

The video, which surfaced on social media platforms, shows Mr Sharma dancing to the popular song "Khal Nayak Hoon Main" from the Sanjay Dutt-starrer Bollywood film Khal Nayak. Mr Sharma brandished a firearm while dancing, an act that many have condemned as highly irresponsible.

Eyewitnesses at the event claim that several rounds of aerial firing occurred during the party, although these allegations have yet to be confirmed by the police.

Mr Sharma is no stranger to the limelight. He gained widespread attention for his role in raiding the barrack of Sukesh Chandrashekhar, the alleged mastermind behind the infamous Rs 200 crore fraud case.  In addition to his professional duties, Mr Sharma is also known for his fitness enthusiasm, amassing over 4.4 lakh followers on Instagram.

Antim Panghal Breaks Silence On Reports Of Her, Sister's Arrest In Paris

Indian wrestler Antim Panghal refuted the rumours of her and her sister's arrest in Paris. After Antim's 0-10 loss against Turkey's Yetgil Zeynep, it was reported that she tried to sneak her sister into the Olympic Games village using her accreditation card but was detained by the French police. However, Antim has now revealed that no such thing happened. While it is true that her sister was taken to the police station, Antim said that it only happened as the police wanted to verify her true identity.

In a video shared by NNIS Sports, Antim revealed that it was she who went to her sister's hotel after falling sick. Since she had forgotten some of her stuff at the Games village, she asked her sister Nisha to get the things from the village, which is when the entire trouble started.

"It wasn't my day yesterday, as I lost my bout. But, since I've lost, talks are going on that my sister has been arrested by the police, or I've been arrested by the police, nothing of that sort has happened," Antim said in a video on Thursday.

"When I lost my bout yesterday, I got a fever. My sister, who has been living in a hotel, wanted to take me there. I had taken permission from my coaches to go with her, as I wasn't feeling well.

"They gave me permission and I came to the hotel. When I came here, I needed some of my stuff which was still in the Olympic Village. As I was unwell, I slept. My sister took my accreditation card and went to the village. She asked the authorities there if she was allowed to get my stuff from the village. The authorities took away the accreditation card from her and took her to the police station for verification. This was the only reason she was taken to the police station. I wasn't taken to the police station," she added.

Antim also revealed that her sister was released by the police soon after the verification was completed "After the verification was done, my sister was sent back with the accreditation card," she said.

A rumour about Antim's coaches getting into a fight with a cab driver also surfaced. She shed light on the incident as well.

"It was also said that my coach fought with a driver but that isn't true either. My coaches were just upset with my loss. I was the one who booked their cab. They came to the hotel but got into a bit of trouble because of a language barrier.

"They wanted to come to the hotel to collect money (Euros) but some miscommunication happened with the cab driver.

"One of my coaches came to the room to collect money and since the room was high up in the building, it took some time. The delay resulted in a bit of an argument with the cab driver, but nothing major," she said.

As far as her return is concerned, the federation had booked her flight from Paris soon after her elimination from the Paris Games was confirmed.

About my return to India, it was I who told the federation to book my flight for today or tomorrow. They had already done that. I request all of you to not spread rumours, as my time here has already been torrid. Thank you.

Akhilesh Yadav Alleges Speaker's Power Being Slashed, Amit Shah Responds

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav today alleged that the rights of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla are being slashed and the Opposition would have to fight for him, drawing a sharp response from Home Minister Amit Shah.

The Kannauj MP was addressing Lok Sabha during the debate on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill when he said, "Your rights and our rights are being curtailed. I had told you that you are the judge of democracy. I have heard that some of your rights are being snatched and we would have to fight for you."

The Union Home Minister rose to respond to Mr Yadav. "This is an insult of the Chair. The rights of the Speaker do not belong to the Opposition, but to the whole House. Don't speak in a roundabout way. You are not the protector of the Speaker's rights," Mr Shah said.

Mr Birla later told Mr Yadav that he and other members of the House must not comment on the Chair. "This is my expectation, no personal remarks should be made on the Chair," he said.

Opposing the legislation, Mr Yadav said it has been introduced as part of a well-thought-out politics. "When there is a democratic process for election, why nominate people? No person from outside the community is part of other religious bodies. What is the point of including non-Muslims in Waqf bodies?" he said.

Mr Yadav said the BJP has brought this legislation to appease some hardline supporters after its setback in the Lok Sabha election.

Opposition parties joined forces to oppose the legislation that aims to address issues related to powers of State Waqf Boards, registration and survey of Waqf properties and removal of encroachment.

The legislation proposes to amend 44 sections of the 1995 Waqf Act. The Bill proposes that the Central Waqf Council and state Waqf Boards must have two women. It also lays down that money received by the Waqf Board must be used for the welfare of widows, divorcees, and orphans in the manner suggested by the government. Another key proposal is that women's inheritances must be protected. The provision for including non-Muslim members of Waqf bodies is another contentious point in the proposed law.

Opinion: Vinesh Phogat, The Darned Woman Athlete Taking Our Breath Away

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Some victories are sweeter than others, some defeats more bitter, whatever the arena be. But what about the cruelty of fate? How does one take heart? The vagaries of destiny are more ruthless than any opponent's blow. They also feel more personal, as if the player in the arena is an alter ego of any and all of the spectators near and far. Vinesh Phogat's Paris Olympics performance is one such instance of the blurring of these boundaries. Many of her cheerleaders today, however, ought to be ashamed of themselves. Whether they will be is anyone's guess.

Phogat has announced her retirement after being disqualified in the Paris Olympics just before her final bout. In Book 22 of the Iliad, Zeus-the king of gods-weighs the fates of Achilles and Hector before their first and final fight. Just like the scales dipped for Hector, foretelling his death, they foretold the death of Phogat's career. The past, present, and future of her sporting career weighed lighter than the weight mandates of her category. Her fate, quite literally, was decided by the wanton scales. This is a tragedy of epic proportions.

It Was More Than Just A Medal

It's not just a medal that Phogat lost; she lost something a lot more precious. Closure. Dragged on the ground, demeaned, and derided during the athletes' protest against sexual harassment, Phogat resolved to avenge her honour and that of many women athletes. She may have still achieved a watered-down form of vindication, but the optics are missing. In a spectacle-crazed nation, visual redemption is the only redemption.

The sports culture of India can be defined by a peculiar tendency to delink the sport from the sportsperson. We, often lose the common-sense understanding that sportspersons are humans with all their foibles and frailties. We deify them with each victory and demonise them should they do anything but win medals. When it comes to women athletes, this treatment is starkly naked, thanks to the good old patriarchy. Men just have to be born while women have to be Olympic champions, along with everything else, to even claim parity. And even then it is denied to them.

And women are growing tired. One day, they might just give up. Many have. Simon Biles did. Sakshi Malik did. Naomi Osaka did. They tell themselves that enough is enough; they need not prove themselves yet again. Vinesh Phogat is not one of them. She knew she had to get on the Olympic podium to get her countrymen to listen to her. This was meant to be her soapbox.

Who Exactly Is A 'Woman' In Sports?

Women athletes are doubly disadvantaged, for they choose an arena that essentially devalues feminine attributes of their constitution. Athleticism is ostensibly partial to masculinity. Sports may give the impression of blurring gender boundaries, but the reality is the opposite. In the sporting arena, gendered attitudes are not only underscored but also magnified. Women are celebrated for exhibiting masculinity-not too much of it, though, lest they be accused of being a 'man'.

Debates on gender bias in every sport in terms of legitimacy, pay, attention, etc, are so old and repetitive that even the staunchest of equality advocates are getting jaded. The more things change, the more they stay the same. This is particularly true of India, which also has a peculiar problem of one sport cannibalising every other. Women athletes in India, therefore, are heroes who must punch way above their weight every single time.

Phogat will soon be forgotten. She won't appear on India's list of Olympic medallists' and nobody will care for what she went through before she fought her way to the finals of 2024 Olympics. Spectacles, as stated earlier, are important to engage fickle collective memory. The hurt and the heartbreak underscoring her retirement announcement ought to rekindle the fire in each woman athlete's belly in India. It should remind them that they are, after all, on their own.

Triple Measures

Sylvia Burrow proposes that "impaired live options for participating and succeeding in sport undermine women's autonomy". Professional women athletes have to overcome that before taking their first step. When women enter competitive public spaces, they are already exhausted by all the behind-the-scenes fighting. Their opponents are not just in front of them but behind and alongside them. Each win, therefore, requires everything in triple measure: strength, resilience, will, and resources. Indian establishment and the public have been failing athletes for a long time. Women athletes in particular. Any show of support is but a blip on the radar.

Yet, the darned woman athlete takes our breath away.
