Couple Flees Sweden Eco-Retreat, Leaves Behind 158 Barrels Of Human Waste

A Danish chef couple, known for their environment-friendly retreat Stedsans, has reportedly fled to Guatemala amid a probe by tax authorities. Flemming Hansen and Mette Helbaek also left 158 barrels of human waste and sewerage now seeping into the nearby forest, The Guardian reported.

Their staff claimed that several animals, including ducks, died as a result of the couple leaving them outside during the night, and that other animals were abandoned after they disappeared.

Hansen and Helbaek claimed to have "felt the call of the wild" when they established their supposedly eco-friendly resort, Stedsans, in Halland, southern Sweden. The couple previously operated a popular rooftop restaurant in Copenhagen.

Reviewers and influencers praised Stedsans, consisting of 16 wooden houses with nature views, calling it "enchanting luxury" and "magical,".

But then, Stedsans was declared bankrupt in March; and the pair allegedly registered as foreign residents prior to Christmas.

The couple is under investigation for leaving a trail of financial and environmental catastrophe after their sudden departure months ago, The Guardian reported, citing Danish media.

After leaving Copenhagen in 2016, where they owed millions of kroner to Danish tax authorities, the pair moved to Sweden and founded Stedsans.

Following the establishment of Stedsans, Hansen and Helbaek began accruing debt to Swedish tax authorities, which reportedly reached 6 million SEK (Euro 470,000).

They have since opened a second hotel in Guatemala.

On their website, the couple said they came very far with Stedsans but also realised that being soul-driven entrepreneurs on a mission in a country with some of the highest in the world and relentless bureaucracy, it was an impossible task.

"When you read this we have probably been declared bankrupt by the Swedish tax authorities. All we ever wanted was to be a part of creating a more beautiful planet," they added.

Authorities are currently looking into the legal and environmental infractions connected to the couple's abrupt disappearance. Officials called the couple's actions "environmental crime," and Daniel Helsing, who leads the county's construction and environment department, expressed shock and said, "Voila. Over 150 barrels of human shit."

Trump-Freed Drug Convict Arrested Again For Assaulting 3-Year-Old

A convicted drug trafficker, freed by President Donald Trump during his first term, was arrested again on Friday following a series of crimes, including charges of injuring a three-year-old. Jonathan Braun was arrested by the US Marshals Service at a hotel in Long Island.

Mr Braun, 41, from Nassau County, has been accused of punching a man during a dinner at his home. After arguing with the man, he shoved his three-year-old child to the ground, according to the complaint.

Brooklyn federal prosecutors revealed that the child got hurt and had a red mark on his back. Judge Kiyo A. Matsumoto detained Mr Braun without bail for violating the terms of his supervised release.

At a hearing in Brooklyn federal court, the judge said, "I am concerned about the nature of the offences. People are getting hurt." She added, "My concern is there are repeated instances of violence and showing lack of stability."

Prosecutors allege that in recent months, Mr Braun also threatened a man during prayers at a synagogue, sexually assaulted his nanny, and attacked a hospital nurse in separate incidents.

The court papers allege that in January, Mr Braun shouted at a congregant who told him to be quiet. He said, "Do you know who I am or what I can do to you?"

Mr Braun is known to have ties with Mr Trump's ally, Charles Kushner. He also has a picture of the 47th President at one of Florida's golf courses in 2022.

Mr Braun was arrested in 2010 for running a huge marijuana business. He served less than three years of a 10-year sentence before Mr Trump let him out of prison on the last day of his first term as president.

Why Big Techs Like Google, Amazon Warned H-1B Visa Holders Not To Leave US

Thousands of immigrant techies, including Indians, are living in the United States in uncertainty over their future under President Donald Trump's stringent immigration policies. Major tech companies, including Google and Amazon, are reportedly asking their H-1B visa holder employee to not leave American soil out of concern they might not be allowed back in.

There are fears that denial rates for high-skilled visas could rise, as they did during President Trump's first term in the White House, according to a report by The Washington Post. The report said the Trump administration's efforts to end automatic citizenship for those born in the US are also making H-1B visa holders fear that their future children could be stateless.

America's H-1B visa programme allows US employers to hire foreign workers in so-called specialty occupations. Every year, 65,000 such visas are issued through a lottery system. In recent years, Indians have received the highest number of H-1B visas, followed by Chinese and Canadian nationals.

Tech Industry's Reliance on Immigrants

Silicon Valley's immigrant tech community has long been seen as one of the key forces behind the US competitiveness in the technology sector. According to a 2018 study by think tank National Foundation for American Policy, more than half of US start-ups valued at more than $1 billion had an immigrant founder or co-founder. The executives of some of the biggest tech giants in the US are immigrants, including those of Microsoft, Google, Uber and chip giant Nvidia.

But under Trump's immigration policies, the future of this community in the country is uncertain. Experts believe that reducing the immigrant workforce from the tech industry could hamper America's ability to compete with China in the race to develop sophisticated technology like artificial intelligence.

“What we're seeing right now is just a lot of worry and panic...It seems like [the administration is] just getting more and more momentum, and we don't know what's around the corner,” Malcolm Goeschl, principal attorney for Goeschl Law, a San Francisco-based firm focused on business immigration that serves clients in the tech industry, told The Washington Post.

Per the report, Amazon had the highest number of H-1B visas approved amongst all Big Tech firms in America, followed by Google, Meta, Microsoft and Apple. Tesla, whose billionaire CEO Elon Musk is a close aide of President Trump and is leading the administration's efforts to cut federal spending, had 1,767 approved H1Bs in the fiscal year ending in September 2024. IT outsourcing companies like Infosys and Cognizant also account for a large portion of H1B applications.

H-1B Workers Worried

However, late last year, before Trump took the oath of office, law firms working for Google and Amazon warned the companies' employees with visas to think twice before traveling abroad, out of concern they might not be allowed back into the U.S, according to The Washington Post report.

At least two H-1B visa holders told the publication that they had to cancel their travel plans to India amid fear of being denied re-entry to the US.

One Indian immigrant said his elder daughter was born a US citizen, but the future of his second child seems opaque as they may not get citizenship in either the US or India. “There's an assumption that everybody who is not a US citizen might be here illegally,” they told the publication through an attorney.

The uncertainty has also created some practical challenges, as many immigrants are always carrying their documentation while in public. “When we're walking around, we always carry our documents,” the other worker said through her attorney.

Immigration lawyers are also reporting anxieties among immigrants due to worries over unexpected changes to visa processes, which are negatively affecting their productivity.

“It definitely impacts their performance,” an HR representative of a tech firm in Silicon Valley told The Washington Post. “The threat is looming that some action will be taken against them.”

The HR representative added that the uncertainty is also adding to the cost of the company, as they have to pay for expediting the processing of some H-1B extensions to counteract delays related.

Uncertainty Over Visa and Green Cards

The issue of H1B visas has emerged as a bone of contention among Trump's supporters. This was visible in December when the two sides argued on X over whether Trump should boost or suppress skilled immigration.

“The number of people who are super talented engineers AND super motivated in the USA is far too low...“If you want your TEAM to win the championship, you need to recruit top talent wherever they may be,” Elon Musk wrote on X on Christmas. He received pushback from some Republicans, including former presidential hopeful Nikki Haley, who said the country should invest in education to train more American-born tech workers.

So far, Trump has not said anything about ending the H1B program or other skilled visas; however, it was part of his agenda in his first term.

Meanwhile, the processing of Green Card requests, which is immigrants' path to permanent residency, is also facing unprecedented delays. Even Aravind Srinivas, CEO of AI company Perplexity, that recently valued at $9 billion, said on social media that he has been waiting three years for a green card despite founding a company that employs hundreds.

“People mostly have no idea when they talk about immigration,” Srinivas posted on X.

Actor Jean-Claude Van Damme Accepted Sex With 5 Women As "Gift": Report

Actor Jean-Claude Van Damme is facing a criminal complaint in Romania for allegedly engaging in sexual relations with trafficked women.

The 64-year-old Street Fighter actor is accused of accepting five Romanian women as a "gift" from a criminal network led by Morel Bolea, according to CNN affiliate Antena 3.

Romanian authorities have filed a complaint with the Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT), alleging the 64-year-old was aware the women were victims of human trafficking.

The alleged incident reportedly took place in Cannes, France, during an event organised by Van Damme. One of the women later provided testimony, leading DIICOT to launch an investigation.

Attorney Adrian Cuculis, representing one of the victims, said, "The women were in a state of vulnerability, with clear indications of exploitation."

He further said, "Several Romanians under investigation for forming a criminal group and trafficking offered Jean-Claude Van Damme five Romanian women. The recipient knew their condition."

It's the second high-profile case from Romania after Andrew and Tristan Tate were arrested on sex trafficking charges in 2022 and only recently permitted to leave the country.

Who is Jean-Claude Van Damme?

Jean-Claude Van Damme is a Belgian martial artist, actor, and filmmaker, best known for action films like Bloodsport (1988), Kickboxer (1989), and Universal Soldier (1992). Born in 1960 in Belgium, he trained in karate and kickboxing before moving to Hollywood in the 1980s.

Nicknamed "The Muscles from Brussels," he became a major action star in the '90s. Despite career highs, he faced struggles with substance abuse and legal issues. He was addicted to cocaine and was arrested for drunk driving and domestic violence once.

As a teenager, he held records in competitive karate - achieving 44 victories and only four defeats. He was a member of the Belgium Karate Team that won the European Karate Championship in 1979.
