Autorickshaws are ubiquitous in Indian cities and quite popular for cheap short-distance travel. To attract more passengers, auto drivers often decorate their three-wheelers with vibrant colours, witty slogans, or quirky posters. One such auto driver is garnering praise online for his unique creativity by turning his rickshaw into a mesmerising mini-garden, that many are calling ''a travelling park.''
In a video shared by a rider on Instagram, one can see the interiors of the auto decorated with vibrant green plants, turning it into a sanctuary for plant lovers. The ceiling of the vehicle has also been adorned with greenery. Not only that, there are also motivational books, posters and a drinking water facility for passengers, adding to the rejuvenating experience.
An Instagram page called depthoughtsz, shared the video with a text insert that reads, “POV: You just got the best auto ride."
The auto driver's unique idea has received immense praise from citizens online.
One user wrote, ''omg i've been in this auto! he's a really humble person and also has a tw handle to spread awareness on road safety. really nice to see what he's done with the ceiling though.''
Another commented, ''That's a Travelling Park! Wow.''
A third said, ''Good.... absolutely a GREEN Auto.'' A fourth added, ''OMG This is super cute!!! I have seen auto rickshaws with lighting but flowersome is the first yet!!"
''He took jungle safari very seriously,'' joked a fifth.

Urvashi Rautela is no stranger to the unpleasant side of social media. The actress has often been subjected to merciless trolling for her statements and social media posts. Now, another video featuring Urvashi Rautela has gone viral on the Internet making her the subject of countless jokes and mean comments. It all started when a reporter asked Urvashi Rautela to share her thoughts on being the highest-paid actress in the country, charging one crore per minute. The reporter asks, “One minute, one crore rupees you are charging, what do you have to say.” Seemingly confirming the reporter's statement, Urvashi Rautela says, “It's a good thing; I think every self-made actor/actress jo hai, unko hai ki woh yeh din dekhe [ I think every self-made actor/actress aspires to see such a day].”
In response to the video shared by the portal, several users ridiculed the actress for her tall claims. One fan said, “Wait, who is paying her? Most importantly who is watching her, lol.” “Deepika, Alia left the chat,” said another. “Isliye ab isko koi movie me ni leta... Can't afford her,” another user wrote with a bunch of laughing emojis.
“Mujhe bhi roj sapne aate hain crorepati wale [Even I dream that I am a crorepati every day],” one user said, while another predicted, “Ye viral meme banne wala hai [This is going to go viral].” “Ye kam kar kidr rahi h dikhayi kiu nhi dera [Where is the work she is talking about? Why can't we see it?]” Seconding this, another user wrote, “But where is she acting?”
Last year, at the Cannes Film Festival, Urvashi Rautela was trolled after she claimed in an interview that Hollywood superstar Leonardo DiCaprio complimented her. “I was so emotional and could feel happy tears in my eyes. At the same time, I was blushing too. He also appreciated me as a very talented actress. I was waking up pinching myself. Did that really happen last night? Was I dreaming about the sweet moment? I think it just shows how even the younger actors want to be out there and inspires young actors to keep going, that's my memory of meeting him…I was freaking out and falling short of words after receiving compliments from Leonardo DiCaprio," she said.
However, once again, the internet did not buy Urvashi Rautela's story. Needless to say, a meme fest followed. “I really admire Urvashi Rautela because she don't care that she lying. She just be lying,” one fan wrote about the actress' statement.

Meanwhile, Gadar 2 has earned mixed reviews from critics. NDTV's Saibal Chatterjee in his review said, "The strident and exhausting Gadar 2, set in the year of Bangladesh's war of liberation, sends intrepid truck driver Tara Singh back into Pakistan to rescue his son from the clutches of a villainous Pakistani general who is foresworn to wiping India off the face of the earth...Gadar 2 is strictly for three categories of people: Sunny Deol fans, those that miss the unbridled excesses of Bollywood of yore, and those that believe that "hate thy neighbour" is an axiom worth cheering for in a movie theatre. The film has enough to please them all - and then some."
Apart from Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel, Utkarsh Sharma and Simrat Kaur also play important roles inGadar 2.

Team India's squad for the Asia Cup 2023 was announced on Monday with skipper Rohit Sharma and BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar revealing the 18-member squad. All-rounder Hardik Pandya was promoted as Rohit's deputy for the continental event while batters KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer made their way back into team after battling through their respective injuries. However, the exclusion of Yuzvendra Chahal sparked a debate as many former cricketers lashed out at the selectors for ignoring the veteran leg-spinner.
The 18-member squad consists of Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav as the spinners. However, former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria backed the selectors for going ahead with Kuldeep over Chahal and stated that the Rajasthan Royals spinner "doesn't deserve" to be in the team right now.
"Yuzvendra Chahal doesn't deserve to be in Team India right now. He has been very inconsistent. Kuldeep Yadav, on the other hand, has picked up wickets regularly and can be effective in the middle overs. The selectors took the right call by going with Kuldeep over Chahal," Kaneria said on his YouTube channel.
Earlier, former India spinner Harbhajan Singh came in support of Chahal and called him India's best spinner in white-ball cricket, adding that a few bad games don't make him a bad bowler.
"The one thing I feel is lacking in the team is the absence of Yuzvendra Chahal. A leg-spinner who can get the ball to turn away. If you talk about genuine spinner, I don't think there's any spinner in India better than Chahal in white-ball formats. Yes, his last few games weren't good, but that doesn't make him a bad bowler," Harbhajan had said on his YouTube channel.
"I think his presence in the team was necessary. I hope the doors aren't closed to him. It's important to consider him for the World Cup because the tournament is in India. Chahal is a proven match-winner. I can understand his form isn't good, so you may have rested him. But I think if he was with the team, his confidence would've stayed intact. Any player who comes back after being dropped, the pressure to perform is always there," he added.

After Chandrayaan-3 scripted history by making India the first nation to land on the Moon's south pole region, an old video of ISRO chief S Somanath has resurfaced on the internet. In the clip, the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation is seen dancing with his colleagues. Given that the clip was shared by a Twitter user on Wednesday night, the internet believed that it was possibly recorded during a Chandrayaan-3's post-landing party. The video in question was shared with the text, “Chief Dr S. Somanath & team ISRO”
The comments section of the post is flooded with users praising ISRO for the success of its lunar mission. Several users claimed that after the accomplishment of such a big mission, the scientists behind it deserved a party.
A comment read, “I was literally thinking, post-touchdown at the moon when the party will be thrown for Team Chandrayaan. Either on Wednesday or Thursday. Here is the answer. Thanks for the proud moment.”
Bravo ISRO team, celebrat with happy & joye for soft landing of chandra yan 3.
Chandrayaan-3 was launched on July 14 and it touched the lunar surface on August 23, overcoming several odds. This was India's third lunar mission after Chandrayaan-2 was listed as a partial failure.
In a conversation with NDTV, the ISRO chief revealed that due to Chandrayaan-2's hard landing no information from the Moon's surface was recovered and because of this they had to start fresh. Continuing further he also elaborated on the workings of Chandrayaan-3.
S Somanath said, “Everything had to be done fresh for this mission. From Chandrayaan-2, we could not recover anything from the moon. The first year was spent figuring out what went wrong with Chandrayaan-2, the next year we revised everything. The last 2 years we conducted tests.”
Despite work schedules being affected by the coronavirus pandemic, ISRO was “still launching some rockets”, S Somnath said. Explaining why they chose the south pole region of the Moon, the ISRO chairman said, “But there are a huge amount of scientific possibilities on the south pole. They are related to the presence of water and minerals on the moon.”
For the next 14 days, the rover will carry out several experiments on the surface of the moon.

Tragedy was narrowly averted at Delhi airport this afternoon after a Vistara flight from Ahmedabad and another plane of the same airline - the two carrying around 300 people in total - thanks to an alert pilot on the former plane.
The Ahmedabad-Delhi flight had just landed and had been instructed by Air Traffic Control to cross an active runway to reach the parking bay. Meanwhile, a Vistara Airlines Delhi-Bagdogra flight had been given permission to take off on that same runway and a collision was only avoided thanks to 45-year-old Captain Sonu Gill on the Ahmedabad-Delhi flight.
The planes were 1.8 km, or 1,800 metres, apart, sources said, stressing that if the pilot had not warned ATC of the presence of the other plane, the outcome could have been disastrous.
According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Vistara flight VTI926 had landed on Runway 29L and told by ATC to cross Runway 29R en route to its parking bay.
However, the ATC official 'momentarily forgot' instructions given to VTI926 and told flight VTI725 to take-off from Runway 29R. The regulator's statement said the ATC 'on realisation of the error, based on input from VTI926, tower controller instructed VTI725 to cancel take-off'.
The aviation regulator said an 'alert pilot in the aircraft crossing the runway (VTI926) alerted Air Traffic Control and the aircraft on its take-off run (VTI725) was ordered to abort take-off'.
According to news agency PTI the DGCA has derostered the ATC official responsible for the runway incursion event.
The Delhi-Bagdogra flight retreated from the active runway immediately after being ordered to abort its take-off and returned to its parking bay. Officials told PTI the plane was refuelled to ensure it had enough fuel for the second take-off attempt and to return to Delhi if the pilot encountered bad weather conditions at or en route to Bagdogra.
Sources said passengers became a little apprehensive when the pilot of the flight bound for Bagdogra announced that the plane will not take off due to instructions from ATC.
Protocol at the Delhi airport is that no aircraft or vehicle movement is allowed when a plane is in the process of take-off or landing. Captain Amit Singh, a senior pilot and the founder of the Safety Matters Foundation, told PTI flight ops 'from closely spaced runways require enhanced monitoring and stricter compliance with SOPs to avoid a potential traffic collision'.
The Delhi-Bagdogra flight was taking off from the newly inaugurated runway and the second Vistara flight, after landing on a parallel runway, was moving to the end of the same runway.
Actress Kriti Kharbanda recently opened up about spotting a hidden camera in one of her hotel rooms. She said that “it's scary” and it is the kind of stuff one has to be careful about. Sharing details, Kriti revealed that the entertainment industry is not all “flowery.” The actress recalled how she spotted a hidden camera in her hotel room, during the shooting of one of her Kannada films. Kriti told Siddharth Aalambayan, “There was this one incident where I remember I was shooting for one of my Kannada films. This boy, who used to work at the hotel, actually left a camera in my room. Me and my staff have a habit of making sure that there is actually nothing popping out of anywhere. He was actually not a pro at it, because it was kept so badly. Voh seedha nazar mai aa raha tha. Set-top box ke piche rakha tha usne. [It was pretty visible, as it was kept right behind the set-top box. It's scary that the kind of stuff you have to be careful about. It's not all flowery in our industry.”
During the interview, Kriti Kharbanda also spoke about non-consensual touch. The actress shared that it is “so upsetting” when someone tries to touch you without your consent. She shared one of her experiences when a fan pinched her while getting a photograph. Kriti said, “He came and stood behind me, like next to me, and he tried to put his arm around me. So I said, "Bhaiya kya kar rahe ho? Hath aage karo. Toh usne mujhe bahut zor se chuti kati (What are you doing? Please keep your hands away and then he pinched me very badly). I even got a blood clot, and he ran. I didn't know how to react. I was very shocked and taken aback.”
Kriti Kharbanda has worked in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films. She is best known for her work in Housefull 4 and Pagalpanti. Kriti was last seen in 14 Phere, alongside Vikrant Massey. Apart from her films and fashion choices, Kriti Kharbanda often makes headlines for her relationship with actor Pulkit Samrat. The lovebirds were co-stars in the 2018 film Veerey Ki Wedding. It was their first film together. Kriti and Pulkit went on to work in the 2019-release comedy film Pagalpanti and Bejoy Nambiar's Taish as well.

Everyone loves a holiday state of mind. To nobody's surprise, celebrities love it equally as much. We'd be lying if we said we don't love a little sun and sand especially if it were in the company of Karisma Kapoor, Ananya and Bhavana Panday in Ibiza. In a series of throwback pictures from their holiday in Spain earlier this year, the trio were toasted but in perfect beach style. While Karisma Kapoor and Bhavana Panday made a stylish case on the importance of the right beach cover-up, Ananya Panday was ready to plunge right into the pool in her shimmery green bikini set. Karisma Kapoor was lounging in a black cover-up topped with black sunglasses on one hand and Bhavana Pandey kept it short and colourful in a printed tunic dress. Ananya Panday was not too far behind on the accessorising game either. She topped her halter bikini set with a golden chain and Prada sunglasses that made for awesome added company to the family holiday.
To spend sunny days on the beach, Karisma Kapoor loves a swimsuit moment to fully immerse herself in the holiday mood. Karisma's swimsuit style is as classic as can be. This time it was a printed monokini with a plunging neckline that made an appearance during her "beach therapy." We're mentally on a beach soaking up some sun ourselves, thanks to Karisma Kapoor.
Ananya Panday too has shared many beach moments from Ibiza in every colour imaginable for a bikini set. Pink, blue - you name it. And even as she continues promoting her film Dream Girl 2 opposite Ayushmann Khurrana, we know she returns from her beach holidays on set every now and then.

On the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Pakistani sister Qamar Mohsin Sheikh is all set to visit New Delhi to tie a 'rakhi' to him. Mrs. Shaikh, a Pakistan-origin woman who moved to Ahmedabad after her marriage, has been tying a rakhi to PM Modi for over 30 years.
Due to the pandemic, she was unable to visit the Prime Minister for the last couple of years but continued the tradition by sending him homemade 'rakhis' by post.Last year too, she sent the sacred thread to PM Modi and wished him for the 2024 general election. This year, she is hopeful of meeting the PM in person and celebrating the festival together. She also plans to gift him a book on agriculture, considering his fondness for reading.
"This time I have made the 'Rakhi' myself. I will also gift him (PM Modi) a book on agriculture as he is fond of reading. For the last 2-3 years, I was unable to go due to Covid, but this time I will meet him in person," she told news agency ANI.
''I pray for him every day for his good health and long life. I believe that all my wishes come true. Earlier when I prayed for him to be the Chief Minister of Gujarat and he became," she further said.
“Whenever I tied the Rakhi, I used to express my desire for him to become the Prime Minister. His response was always affirmative, saying that all your wishes will be fulfilled by God. He is doing commendable work for the country," she added.
Mrs. Shaikh had earlier said her first Raksha Bandhan with PM Modi was when he was an RSS worker.
Raksha Bandhan marks the bond of love between siblings and will be celebrated on August 30 this year. Sisters tie a rakhi on their brothers' wrists and pray for their prosperity and longevity. In return, the brothers pledge to protect and support the sisters.
Overriding the Biden administration's appeal, a US court has ordered a stay on the extradition of Pakistani-origin Canadian businessman Tahawwur Rana, to India where he is facing a trial for his involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack.
Ruturaj Gaikwad feels leading a side is a complicated affair but he will try to make it simple like his Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni when he captains India at the Asian Games next month. Gaikwad will captain a side full of youngsters in Hangzhou with the main team busy with World Cup preparations at the same time. "Leadership role is a very complicated thing to be honest. What Mahi bhai (Dhoni) always says is to take it one game at a time, don't worry about the future. "Everyone creates hype and whatever it is. I am not the kind of person who tracks social media and hear things about what anyone is saying about me. "I think this is one of the traits that I have learned at CSK. I am pretty much clear about giving my best in the field, coming back home, chilling with my friends," he told reporters after India's 33-run win over Ireland in the second T20 on Sunday.
The right-hander, who warmed up the bench for the major part of the West Indies tour, is getting to open in the T20s against Ireland. He scored a match-winning 58 off 43 balls after a sedate start.
"Due to the overnight rain, the wicket was slightly damp and on the slower side. Back of length was difficult to hit on this wicket, even the slower ones and cutters were difficult to hit.
"Being an opener I have the luxury to eat up some balls upfront, 10-15 balls and come back and cover. Batters coming in usually have less overs left so you can't have too many dot balls. Being an opener you get enough time to assess the wicket." As he doesn't get to play regularly, the Ireland series is of extra significance to him.
"It is very important. It is very different when you play from the first game itself (rather than getting an odd game in a series). You come in with lot of confidence, lot of preparation and the right mindset.
"At the same time there is no space in the main team as there are batters doing really well. It is a mixed feeling. It was a great opportunity and one more game to go."
'Rinku knows when to pull the trigger'
IPL sensation Rinku Singh made his much awaited debut in the first T20 but only got to bat on Sunday. He smashed 38 off 21 balls that pushed India past 180. The southpaw took his time initially before going ballistic.
Ruturaj was all praise for Rinku.
"He has already become everyone's favourite in the IPL. The way he has batted this year he has shown a lot of maturity and I think the stand out thing is that he doesn't attack from ball one.
"He gives himself time, assesses the conditions and then attacks. It is a good learning for other players. You can always cover up later. He knows when to pull that trigger. It was an important innings for him," he added.

Team India emerged victorious by 33 runs in the second T20I against Ireland on Sunday. The Jasprit Bumrah-led team displayed a dominant approach to gain an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Opting to bat first, the visitors posted a total of 185/5 in 20 overs with Ruturaj Gaikwad top-scoring with 58 runs. Later, Ireland were restricted at 152/8 despite Andrew Balbirnie scoring 72 runs. This game turned out to be really special for batter Rinku Singh as he bagged away the Player of the Match award in his maiden batting stint.
The Kolkata Knight Riders star made his international debut in the first T20I against Ireland but did not get an opportunity to bat. However, he grabbed the chance with open arms in the second match as he played a blistering knock of 38 off just 21 balls and took Team India to a good total. His innings was laced with two boundaries and three gigantic sixes.
"I am feeling very good. I was trying to do what I have done in the IPL. I was very confident and tried to stay calm. I listen to the captain (smiles). I am feeling very nice. I have been playing for 10 years. All my efforts have born fruition. I am happy to get the Man of the Match award in my first game," said Rinku after the match.
Fine hands by Ruturaj Gaikwad (58, 43 balls, 6x4, 1x6), Sanju Samson (40, 26 balls, 5x4 1x6) and Rinku Singh (38, 21 balls, 2x4, 3x6) moulded India's charge with the bat.
But on a true pitch, Indian bowlers had to back their batsmen and they produced a superb collective spell under captain Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna and Ravi Bishnoi, who grabbed six wickets between them.
The third and final T20I of the three-match series will be played on Wednesday at The Village in Dublin.
For content creators and influencers, dealing with online trolls can be never-ending. Influencers who choose to showcase their lives to the public often end up becoming targets of vile attacks, abuses, and unnecessary scrutiny. While some creators ignore such trolls and do not give them any attention, some influencers believe in hitting back, and rightly so. Recently, a Pakistani influencer faced a degrading comment associated with traditional gender roles, and she decided to give a befitting answer.
In an Instagram ‘Ask Me Anything', Kashaf Ali was asked by a troll to go and wash the dishes. ''Bartan dho jaker,'' read the comment.
Taking an unexpected approach, Ms. Ali took her phone into the kitchen and filmed herself washing the dishes, during the live session. Once she was done with the chore, she questioned why cleaning dishes is used as a derogatory phrase for women.
“Dho diye maine bartan. Isse kya as a person main choti pad gayi ya mai badi ban gayi? Ya, Kya ho gaya? Kuch nahi. Sahi hai. Ek kaam tha, maine kar liya. Isko as a derogatory term aap kyu istemaal karte ho for a woman? Ki ‘go to the kitchen, do the dishes.' Bro ye kya hai? (I washed the dishes. Does this make me small or does it make me a bigger person? Or what happened? Nothing. It's fine. It was a task, I did it. Why do you use this as a derogatory term for a woman?)”
She added, “Thodi akal istemaal karo yaar. Ab baar baar bartan kaun khareed sakta hai har khane ke liye? Dhoge hi na yaar? Ajeeb, har cheez main tum logo ko main samjhaun? (Use some common sense. Who can afford to buy dishes for every meal? You will have to wash them only, Strange, do I have to explain everything to you?)”
Internet users loved her response and praised her for turning a negative comment into a teachable moment. Many also thanked her for sparking a conversation around gender equality.
One user wrote, ''manners, the way she talks, and no frustration. no ugly screeching sounds, just plain opinion. it's inherent in their nature. so peaceful and charming.''
Another commented, ''She is so clear for this. I mean men here write go to kitchen as if it's a slur. Fella you don't go doesn't mean others don't go as well.''
A third said, ''My kind of response.'' ''A very nice reply to the troll, appreciate it, keep it up,'' a fourth added.

Actor Dulquer Salmaan is all set for the release of his film King of Kotha touted to be a gangster and a high-octane action drama. Aishwarya Lekshmi, Dulquer Salmaan and Shabeer Kallarakkal attended the song release and trailer showcasing the event of the movie.
Taking about the making of the movie actor Dulquer Salmaan told ANI, "The most memorable thing of our gangster films of either been some great dramas or they've been out and out messy entertainers. And when I heard the script for the first time, I feel like it had the drama and the story that this genre really needs all of the characters in the film, like if you remove one character you can't tell the same story."
He added, "If we thought of how to kind of blend both these extremes of gangster films that we love. So this has the drama and the story and the writing, how to make it more mainstream, more commercial, more entertaining for the audiences in cinema. This has a nice blend of both."
He continued, "We started in 2020, and I became the producer because I wanted to protect our film. Many times it happened that we were damaging the film in some way from the production sites, perhaps we were not giving the budget to it, not releasing it properly, not marketing or distributing properly. So I felt that if I produce myself, I will be able to do all that is right for the film. To mount such a big film, a big studio was needed, so we are making this film with Zee Studios, they have been good partners since the beginning."
"In India, we all have a belief that if the time is good, everything will work, maybe their time is very good, so we can also benefit from it. The trailer was attached to the Gadar 2 trailer and Gadar 2 became such a big hit. We can't have a bigger marketing than that, because people might have seen our trailer even now. So we hope that we can also ride the wave of right time."
Taking about the film Actor Aishwarya Lekshmi said, "Even though it's a gangster drama, the emphasis was on the story and how well it was written. There are a lot of characters. Every character is well-written and is important and crucial to this film.
On top of all that, it was well mounted and for a gangster drama of the scale to actually come to fruition and be a brilliant film, it needed that budget, which I think Wayfara Films and Zee Studios provided."
She added, "My character's name is Tara and Tara is a strong girl. How was Tara's life ten years ago and ten years later, I got the chance to do that research and show it on screen. She believes a few things, and she fights for a few things, that she believes are right. But that gangster's girlfriend, that conflict also seemed interesting to me There is a little conflict in his family that every woman can relate to because she truly loved Raju. That conflict would be liked by Raju, maybe the audience likes more music, I like Tara And Raju's track which is very interesting"
Taking about his role actor Shabeer Kallarakkal said, "For me first the story work and to top it off Dulquer playing as lead and his production, what better combination I can ask when storyline is brilliant my character also absolutely brilliant for me to do it."

Smartly written, slickly crafted and wonderfully acted, Guns & Gulaabs, created by Raj and DK, is a marvellously wacky crime drama that harks back to the 1990s and sees the darkly piquant side of men (and a couple of women) who derive perverse pleasure from murder, mayhem and meanness.
The deliriously spry Netflix series pans out in a twisted and toxic universe peopled by opium dealers, gun-toting gangsters, a vicious knife-wielding assassin with seven lives, an anti-narcotics officer with a troubling past that catches up with him and two diffident men with debilitating daddy issues.
The gulaabs referred to in the title and in the name of the small town in which the story is set are outnumbered in this amoral world where adults and schoolboys alike thrive on crossing the line. A 'line of control', however, runs through a local dhaba and separates it into demarcated and inviolable spaces for two warring gangs.
The handful of innocents who reside in Gulaabgunj, nestled in the hills and dotted with opium fields, are at the mercy of the two criminal cliques, one of which operates out of a place called Sherpur, 30 km away. They battle for control over the spoils of an illegal opium business that functions outside the purview of the cultivation of poppy under government licence.
Guns & Gulaabs starts off with shots of a poppy farm, a sequence of two schoolboys discussing the girls they are in love with, and a chase scene that ends with a killing in broad daylight. So, all three key components of the plot - opium, love and violence - are packed into the opening moments of the series.
Other secondary elements, including a rivalry between two school students for the class topper's badge, emerge as the plot thickens and culminates in a dizzyingly rollicking, action-packed finale - an episode that is numbered 7 and 8, runs nearly an hour and a half and has an intermission.
Everybody in Gulaabgunj and Sherpur has an ulterior motive and a self-serving plan. These nefarious plans change frequently as the crooked men chase or flee from others of their kind. As small-town noir meets 90s nostalgia in a landscape where the air is thick with intrigue, the soundtrack is laced with snatches Hindi film songs from three decades ago.
The man murdered at the beginning of Chapter 1 is Babu Tiger, trusted aide of Gulaabgunj crime lord Ganchi (Satish Kaushik) and estranged father of motorcycle mechanic Tipu (Rajkummar Rao). Ganchi is furious at losing a key gang member and plots a reprisal. Tipu, in contrast, is almost relieved that his father is dead.
Tipu is rid of his father. Jugnu (Adarsh Gourav) isn't. The latter is Ganchi's only son and reluctant successor to his father's empire. Narcotics bureau officer Arjun Varma (Dulquer Salmaan), who was a deputy commissioner of police in Delhi when a 60-crore scam (Bofors?) rocked the nation, is transferred to Gulaabgunj with a brief to clean up the place.
A hired killer, Atmaram (Gulshan Devaiah), working for the Sherpur gang led by Nabeed (Nilesh Divekar), Ganchi's former protégé, is on the prowl armed with a slasher. Nobody in Ganchi's gang is safe as long as Atmaram - his name has Chaar Cut prefixed to it because of the manner in which he kills - is out and about.
Arjun Verma does not arrive in this crime hotspot a day too soon. Ganchi has just swung a deal with Sukanto (Rajatava Dutta), representing a Calcutta drug cartel. He has a month to acquire seven times the amount of opium that he usually produces.
It is this deal and its shifting dynamics that are at the centre of Guns & Gulaabs. The farmers, the gangsters and the buyers go into overdrive to make sure that Gulaabgunj produces the requisite amount of refined opium for the Calcutta drug mafia. Arjun and his department swing into action to prevent the supply.
Alliances are forged, the police officer's relationship with his wife Madhu (Pooja A. Gor) drifts to the brink when a past liaison Yamini (Shreya Dhanwanthary) returns to haunt him, and matters of the heart come to the fore in uneasy circumstances. Tipu writes a love letter to school teacher Lekha (TJ Bhanu 'Parvati Murty') and it boomerangs on him.
Nobody in Gulaabgunj appears to be high on opium, but whisky, which flows free in Ganchi's den, turns risky at one point, triggers a crisis and pulls a reluctant Jugnu, Chhota Ganchi, into the thick of the action. Talking of reluctance, Tipu, too, is an unwilling inheritor of his father's dodgy legacy although he has two unintended kills to his credit and with his spanner at that. The deed earns him the sobriquet of Paana Tipu.
If Tipu does not remember his father fondly, it is not only because the dreaded gangster left his mother for another woman. Baap ajeeb qism ka jantu hota hai (Fathers are strange creatures), he says in one scene. For Jugnu, the struggle with his inheritance is not so much about hating his father and growing out of his shadow as about earning his old man's validation. I want to make dad proud, he says.
Woven into the narrative and visual design of Guns & Gulaabs is a sustained tribute to the early 1990s, and the Hindi cinema and music of the decade in particular. The plot and the soundtrack are littered with sounds, songs and references of the era. The series is a popular culture geek's delight.
The names of the characters reflect an period that predates the birth of Rahul and Raj on the big screen - Gangaram, Lalkishan, Chandralekha, Mahendra, Atmaram... The titles of several of the chapters are drawn from songs/films of the 1980s and 1990s - Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki,Do Dil Mil Rahe Hain and Raat Baaki.... One chapter title takes off from a Bryan Adams number.
Not just that, the series has a love ditty (composed by Aman Pant, who produces a delightfully retro background score) in the voice of Kumar Sanu. Among other things, the series designs the Satish Kaushik credit on a calendar.
And, not to forget, there's a mention of the cult kung-fu film, The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, which Tipu watches with his best friend Suneel (Goutam Sharma, who also plays one of Suneel's two twins, with his real-life twin Gourav Sharma portraying the other).
Guns & Gulaabs is studded with a quartet of wonderful performances from Rajkummar Rao, Dulquer Salmaan, Gulshan Devaiah and Adarsh Gourav. The larger cast of actors is no less impactful, with TJ Bhanu shining the brightest in a male-dominated series that touches upon the theme of gender and notions of masculinity in surprising ways. Pooja A. Gor and Shreya Dhanwanthary have much less to do, but they, too, make their presence felt. Vipin Sharma as Ganchi's righthand man Mahendra is solid.
Guns & Gulaabs watchable all the way, is a magnificent combination of stylistic elan and storytelling chutzpah.
