Lahore-Born NZ Debutant Breaks India Star's All-Time Record With Blitz vs Pak

New Zealand all-rounder Muhammad Abbas on Saturday shattered a huge record during the 1st ODI against Pakistan at the McLean Park in Napier. On debut against the country of his birth, Abbas struck 52, setting a world record for the fastest half-century on debut when he reached 50 off the 24th ball he faced. Abbas, who was born in Lahore, surpassed the previous best of Indian all-rounder Krunal Pandya, who had scored a fifty in 26 balls on his ODI debut.

Meanwhile, New Zealand won the series-opener to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. After being put into bat, the Kiwis, led by Mark Chapman's second ODI century, posted 344/9 in 50 overs at the McLean Park.

Chapman inflicted misery upon his favourite opponents once more, slamming a career-best 132 off 111 balls. A 199-run stand for the fourth wicket between him and Daryl Mitchell revived New Zealand's after the Pakistan bowlers did well to reduce them to 3/50.

Mitchell slammed 76 off 84 balls, before Abbas' blitz steered New Zealand close to 350. For the visitors, Akif Javed claimed 2-55 on his international debut, but the best figures were recorded by part-time seamer Irfan Khan, who took 3-51 off five expensive overs at the death.

In reply, Pakistan looked on track at 249-3 after half-centuries from the recalled Babar Azam and vice-captain Salman Ali Agha. Babar top-scored for Pakistan with 78 off 83 balls, but it was his dismissal that sparked a batting collapse.

The visitors lost seven wickets in the space of 22 runs, including Babar and Salam (58 off 48). Nathan Smith took 4/60.

"The way we started second innings, we went with good intent. When you are near the chase, pressure increases, three-four overs changed the momentum. Pitch was not good early on, difficult to bat on...Chapman played fantastically and put good runs. We need to improve more and take benefit of the toss. We had some new guys in the middle order and it's difficult because they are playing in challenging conditions," Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan said after the match.

"I think it was a great game of ODI cricket, lots of ebbs and flows. You can apply some T20 skills that the young players are learning quickly. It's great to see ODI cricket still alive I guess. (on bowling main quicks early on) You just try use your resources as best as you can, fortunately it paid off. You roll the dice and luckily it came off for me today. (on Abbas) it's a great sign for domestic cricket that guys coming in and stepping up and playing the way they play in domestic cricket. To stay in the game, keep fighting, that New Zealand spirit and it's what we re all about," Kiwi skipper Michael Bracewell added.

"Am Sensible, Senior... More Than Mr Nadda": DK Shivakumar On 4% Quota Row

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar snapped back at the BJP Monday in a rapidly escalating face-off over his "the Constitution will be changing" remark, which was made amid another row - this time over the state's four per cent minority quota for public contracts.

Mr Shivakumar accused his rivals of misquoting him and spreading fake news and called out BJP boss JP Nadda, who - accompanied by slogan-shouting and jeering in the Rajya Sabha - this morning accused the Karnataka leader and his party of trying to "shred the Constitution".

"I am a sensible and senior politician... more so than Mr Nadda. I have been in the Assembly for the last 36 years. I have basic common sense. I casually said there would be changes after various judgements (by the courts) ... I never said we are going to change the Constitution."

"Whatever they are quoting me as saying is wrong. They are miscarrying it. We are a national party... our party brought Constitution to this country..." Mr Shivakumar told reporters.

The Congress leader also vowed to file a breach of privilege notice.

The two parties have gone head-to-head over the Karnataka government's four per cent minority quota order, which the BJP has slammed as "minority appeasement". Mr Nadda, speaking in the Rajya Sabha, declared the Constitution does not permit reservations in the name of religion.

"In Karnataka, the Congress has already introduced four per cent reservation based on religion for public contracts. Such laws and policies should be withdrawn. No one can change the Constitution that evolved under the guidance of BR Ambedkar," he stated.

Mr Nadda's comments and vociferous statements by his Congress counterpart, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, triggered chaos in the House.

Mr Rijiju set the ball calling Mr Shivakumar's statement "an assault on the Constitution", and demanding the Congress explain "why it wants to change the Constitution..."

"Raising the issue of Muslim reservation, Congress has sullied prestige of Babasaheb Ambedkar's Constitution. If you have guts, demand resignation of (Mr Shivakumar) ..." he said.

That was followed by Mr Kharge pointing out it was the Congress that undertook the 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' to protect the Constitution and declaring "nobody can change" that document.

All of this, in turn, was triggered by the Karnataka government last week passing a bill to provide that four per cent reservation. The bill was passed amid chaotic scenes in the Assembly; BJP lawmakers climbed on the podium and threw papers at Speaker U T Khader's chair.

The bill - an amendment to the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurements (KTPP) Act - sets aside four per cent of contracts in (civil) works valued up to Rs 2 crore, and goods/services procurement contracts up to Rs 1 crore, for members from the Muslim community.

READ | Bill Providing 4% Muslim Reservation Passed In Karnataka Assembly

The BJP has severely criticised the move, calling it an "unconstitutional misadventure" and vowing to fight it all the way up to the Supreme Court. "We will fight and oppose this inside the courtroom."

"We will take the fight to people in Karnataka. Until and unless, the unconstitutional move is rolled back, the BJP's fight will continue," BJP MP Tejasvi Surya said.

The Congress, meanwhile, has dismissed the BJP's objections, pointing out the benefits extends beyond Muslims to include all minority communities. Defending the move, Mr Shivakumar also took a jab at the BJP, stating "BJP always oppose Congress policies... but they like the and follow them..."

Comic's "Basic Common Sense" Post Over Shiv Sena's Mumbai Studio Rampage

Protesting against Shiv Sena workers' vandalism at Mumbai's Habitat studio, a popular comic has said it is not "Kunal Kamra's studio" and thousands of artists perform there. Abijit Ganguly has said damaging the studio over Kunal Kamra's remarks against Sena chief Eknath Shinde was like vandalising a residential complex because Kunal Kamra visited it once.

"Can people at least apply basic common sense and stop calling it Kunal Kamra's studio? It's a performing arts venue. A venue that doesn't have anything to do with Kamra. Thousand other artist(s) perform there. Even the biggest Kamra hater has to realise this is akin to Kamra appearing in your society tomorrow and people coming in and breaking down your whole society because he was there once," he said in a post on X.

Habitat studio is a preferred venue for stand-up comedy shows by popular comics. It made headlines last month too, when YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia made crass remarks at a roast show, India's Got Latent, shot at the studio.

Earlier today, the studio management said they had decided to shut the premises for now and pointed out that they are not responsible for the views of the artists performing on the premises.

"We are shocked, worried and extremely broken by the recent acts of vandalism targeting us. Artists are solely responsible for their views and creative choices. We have never been involved in the content performed by any Artist, but the recent events have made us rethink about how we get blamed and targeted every time almost like we are a proxy for the performer."

""We are shutting down till we figure out the best way to provide a platform for free expression without putting ourselves and our property in jeopardy. We invite all artists, audience and stakeholders to discuss and share their views freely and request your guidance so that we also respect the performers' rights," the studio said.

Earlier, the studio had said in a social media post that it was not involved in the making of Kunal Kamra's latest video and "does not endorse the views expressed by it". "We extend a sincere and heartfelt apology to all those hurt by this video," it said after a group of Sena workers entered the premises in Khar and damaged property to protest against the comic's remarks against Mr Shinde. Visuals showed Sena workers swinging chairs at cameras, lights and speakers at the studio.

In a show shot last month, Kunal Kamra targeted Mr Shinde with a parody version of 'Bholi Si Surat', a popular song from the 1997 blockbuster Dil To Pagal Hai. He used the 'gaddar' (traitor) jibe against the Shiv Sena leader, who led a rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray in 2022, bringing down his government and splitting the party. Multiple FIRs have been filed against the comic, including one based on a complaint by minister Pratap Sarnaik.

French Scientist Denied Entry To US Over Phone Texts Critical Of Trump

A French scientist was denied entry to the US after immigration officials found text messages that were critical of Donald Trump, the Guardian reported. According to a diplomatic source, the incident unfolded on March 9, when the French space researcher was barred from entering the United States upon arrival in Texas, where he was scheduled to attend a conference near Houston.

Upon arrival in Texas, the researcher was subjected to a random check, which included a search of his work computer and personal phone. US Customs and Border Protection officials found messages on his devices that were critical of the Trump administration's policies on research funding and scientific priorities, describing them as "hateful and conspiratorial" and potentially linked to terrorism.

The researcher's equipment was confiscated, and he was put on a plane back to Europe the following day. The French government has strongly condemned the incident, highlighting the growing tensions between the two nations.

"This measure was apparently taken by the American authorities because the researcher's phone contained exchanges with colleagues and friends in which he expressed a personal opinion on the Trump administration's research policy," Philippe Baptiste, France's minister of higher education and research, said in a statement to AFP, published by French newspaper Le Monde.

"Freedom of opinion, free research, and academic freedom are values that we will continue to proudly uphold. I will defend the right of all French researchers to be faithful to them, while respecting the law," the minister added.

Meanwhile, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has acknowledged the US's sovereign right to decide who enters its country, while also expressing disappointment over the situation. The ministry emphasised France's commitment to academic and scientific cooperation, as well as its desire to promote freedom of expression.

Notably, Donald Trump's administration has made significant changes to scientific research funding since taking office in January. One major change is the capping of indirect costs for National Institutes of Health (NIH) research grants at 15%. This move has been met with opposition, as it would cut billions of dollars in funding for life-saving research.

Opinion: Severance: Are You An 'Innie' Or An 'Outie'?

Nobody would've expected Severance to become the kind of pop-culture phenomenon it is today. Back in 2022, when the show premiered on AppleTV+, it was met with barely a whimper. But why is the series, critiquing worker exploitation and corporate greed, getting such rave reviews three years after its first season appeared? What gives?

Perhaps its popularity is a sign of our times. Maybe all of us are so sick and tired of our jobs that a science-fiction show about a larger-than-life corporate entity psychologically abusing its employees hits too close to home. Or perhaps being severed' seems strangely appealing to some of us so that our workplace trauma doesn't spill into our personal lives.

Fans have been writing lengthy threads dissecting the visual cues in Severance. Conspiracy theorists have put on their tin foil hats and made intelligent guesses about the unfolding mystery, which culminates in the season finale releasing on March 21. Severance is to the 2020s what Game of Thrones was to the previous decade. Theme parties, cosplays, fan edits and podcasts analysing the plot twists are proof that Ben Stiller's show will go down as one of the greatest in pop-culture history.

Perhaps the reason the show resonates so much with viewers today is because it exposes the sinister nature of corporate drudgery while simultaneously urging them to be the champions of an inevitable work revolution.

Let Them Rebel

It is no surprise that the most rebellious employee on the severed floor, Helly R (played by a phenomenal Britt Lower), got the loudest cheers and hoots when she locked horns with her boss, Seth Milchick (Tramell Tillman) in last week's episode. But she's not the only rebel on the floor. At one point, Milchick himself asks Mr Drummond—who had earlier been critical of his usage of big words—to "devour flatulence", or, to be clearer, "eat shit". The moment even inspired yours truly to go on LinkedIn and call out their toxic boss.

In another scene from the same episode, Milchick calls up Mark, who is reintegrating and trying to free his wife, Gemma, from the Lumon building. At first, Mark lies about being sick. But then, he quickly backtracks and says, "I am not sick—I just need the day. You know, life stuff". The moment is monumental in TV history for multiple reasons. Not only did Mark S stand up for himself and risk being locked out of the Lumon building, but he, unknowingly, inspired Milchick to rebel too. In a scene, Milchick tears up realising Lumon promised him work-life balance. Much like his subordinate, Milchick, too, is consumed by work. He has been loyal to Lumon all these years, only for him to find a cathartic release in Mark-Helly's anti-work rhetoric.

You Own Nothing

Much to the dismay of Severance fans, Episode 8 focused entirely on Ms Cobel (Patricia Arquette), the ex-floor manager at Lumon who has lived a difficult life herself. Fans were still on a sun-induced high from last week's episode Chikhai Bardo', so the stunning revelations in episode 8 flew under the radar. A lesser-appreciated reveal in the episode focused on how Ms Cobel not only worked for Lumon as a child (the legal violation of it all!) and on how she had also designed the severance chip but wasn't given credit for it because "Kier said knowledge is for all. That if I sought credit, I would be banished".

It's a sad reminder for all kinds of creators working across industries—whatever intellectual property we create for a company is owned by it. Ms Cobel realises much later that the Eagens exploited her intellectual capabilities for their sick, twisted experiment. But she isn't the only child Lumon exploits for labour. In the ninth episode, we see a young receptionist, Ms Huang (Sarah Bock), enter a bus (presumably meant for kids) and leave the Lumon building after completing her winter fellowship, pointing to a possible network of underage employees working at apprentice shops. Such is the corrosive nature of corporate greed that it may not spare even kids.

Can You Speak?

Severance also touches on the realities of race. It consciously and very clearly demarcates employees who are brainwashed and would do just about anything to support Lumon/Eagans, from the rebels. Case in point: Seth Milchick. Milchick is indeed a black man in a white man's world. While the success of the MDR department depends solely on Mark's number-refining, Milchick is tasked with the responsibility of making sure none of his predominantly white innies stray from Kier's path and finish the tasks to their completion. For many, Stiller's gaze on people of colour is problematic. This couldn't be further from the truth.

Unlike Mark and Helly, the white, rebellious innies of the MDR department, Milchick cannot afford to raise his voice against the Eagens/Kiers owing to his racial identity, the same way a white employee might find it easier to call out their white boss at the workplace than a black employee. It is no surprise that Gemma, a woman of colour, is not only denied her bodily autonomy but suffers the most out of all the female characters in the show. On the surface, it might seem that all the faces of the 'Severance Reform' are white men and women, but a closer look reveals that the gender and racial identities of Lumon's employees decide who gets to rebel, and how much.

Perhaps The World Ends Here

Severance isn't just a genre-defying sci-fi mystery drama that makes you want to nerd out. At its core, it urges us to question the corporations that are slowly taking over our lives bit by bit, leaving us with barely any space to breathe. Being able to afford to take the elevator itself might soon feel like a privilege in India, what with industrialists asking their employees to work 70, 90 hours a week now. Perhaps the employees can just take a leaf out of Gemma's (Dichen Lachman) book and stay in the office building forever. The work won't end, and neither will capitalist greed.

How much of Severance is science fiction, and how much of it is already a reality? Sure, a corporate entity like Lumon building entire towns to control workers and their families may be hard to imagine in the real world. Or, is it? Given how tightly all of our paychecks—and therefore, survival—are controlled by the elite, is Severance's dystopian world really that fantastical? Or is it already here?

Think about it. But don't forget to log in on time—and praise your Kier!
