There is a number in this year's SIPRI Yearbook that should stop everyone cold. In 2025, the world spent $2.887 trillion on its militaries, the eleventh straight year of increase, pushing the global military burden to 2.5% of world GDP, the highest since 2009. Think about that: not since the world was clawing out of the 2008 financial crash, have nations poured this much of their wealth into weapons. And the line is still climbing.
