When the Taliban recaptured Afghanistan, they were taking over a changed country. One of the most visible symbols of that change is Tolo News, Afghanistan's first independent news channel, launched over a decade ago, which represented not just the country's growing, vibrant media, much of which was banned under Taliban 1.0. It also represented the hard-won freedom of Afghanistan's women. How the Taliban treat organisations like TOLO News could become a crucial bellwether for Taliban's claims of having changed.
